It is very much an accomplishment! Their coop and run are temporary, we plan on building a permanent structure over the summer. I gave them their yogurt treat today, boy am I glad I didn't give it to them when they were in the house. Talk about messy!!
We finally finished our chicken run over the weekend! My girls and one boy are really enjoying the fresh air and I can stand in the dining room or kitchen window and watch them and I LOVE it!! Yesterday I noticed they slipped back into their coop so I stood at the kitchen window and hollered...
He was named Taylor when we thought he was a pullet, now that we know he is a roo we changed his name to Brooster L'Rooster. My husbands name is Bruce that's where we got Brooster and our last name is L'Heureux (LaRue) so that's where L'Rooster came from. Believe me we were not creative at all...
I'm also new to chicks but I never had to use paper towels. I just put pine shavings in the brooder and food in their feeder. They had no problems finding their food or water and no problems eating or drinking.
I'm new to chicks, with that being said, here is my opinion. I would wait until the roo is older and put him on the table. At least you will be getting some use out of him.
When we got our chicks we picked out 8 RSL and we were told the other 4 were New Hampshires. Looking at all the pics and info regarding NH's I'm not so sure that's what we got. Can anyone help me determine the breed? They have feathery legs/feet also, I don't think it is to visible in the pic...

I have 12 pullets. 8 RSL and 4 NH. I ordered 3 roosters just in case anything happened to one of them. When they are old enough to go outside we plan on keeping them in a 1 acre fenced in area. With all the predators we have in our area I do not feel comfortable free ranging them. We live in...
My husband and I went to our local feed bin the other day looking for a rooster to add to our bunch. I've been reading about which breeds are more docile than others and thought I had my facts straight when I ordered 3 roosters. I ordered 3 RIR's thinking I read they were not very aggressive...
I'm pretty proud of my girls! When I was a kid my parents had 400 chickens, but I don't remember much about their care. Here is a pic of my girls eating out of my hand in their old brooder.
This one is the day we brought them home.
What size would you recommend for 12 hens. We have 4 NH and 8 RSL. My husband and I were thinking 8X8. We live in Northern Wisconsin so we are guessing when the weather gets bitter cold they will spend some time inside. Does 8X8 sound big enough? This is our first flock so I'm figuring I will be...
I love these girls. There are two in particular who have really stole my heart. Eating out of my hand. The one up higher I named Elizabeth after my camera hog sister and the red sex link with short feathers is named Taylor after my no fear daughter!
Thanks for the info. I have done tons of research on chickens but obviously this does not make me an expert! LOL When I was a kid my parents had 400 egg layers but I was so young the only thing I remember is collecting and helping mom wash the eggs to be sold. My husband and I (more me) have...
