Here is a picture since we've done some work on the run. We want to cage it in all the way up and cover the top. Just slowly building up the supplies, really. We were going to add tin to part of the top, but it's not long enough, which is why it's in the background of one of the pics! Oh...
Our coop is finally done! It's made from recycled and refurbished materials. We bought some 2x4's & chicken wire. The run isn't completed but it was done enough to move them in this weekend! We'll go through and close it in higher one night this evening, but they seem happy! There's still some...
Agreed! This post made me itch to get my garden started. In fact, I got the whole area cleaned of dead/overgrown shrubs and vines this weekend after seeing the pictures here! We just moved in in November. Whoever lived here first must have loved to garden. Then either lost interest or was...
I love all the coop pictures! I've had this page up for days to peruse when I have a few spare minutes :) I thought I'd share a few "in progress" pics of ours! It's the first time we've made anything like this ourselves, so it's taken a few weeks. Hopefully we'll have it done this weekend, but...
Thanks for the responses, everyone! I feel better about it, now. Hopefully we should hear about the chicks pretty soon! I don't know exactly the age difference but it should be under 2 months for sure. These are 2 weeks, now, and I want to say the new ones should hatch in the next week or 2 if...
Thanks. Our brooder is kind of small. I was planning to move the current chicks into the coop/run before we get the new babies so none of them are cramped. Is that not a good idea?
Hi everyone!
We are brand new to chickens, with 6 2-wk old chicks. They are currently in the brooder and we plan to move them outside once the coop is done & the weather is consistently warm (probably a couple of weeks).
Well right around that same time, we are supposed to get some more...
Do you know what kind that is? It does look kind of similar to these, although some have more red and some are more light yellow, but as far as I can tell all of their wing feathers are coming in really light yellow/white.
Well 1116 now! No way can I read it all, hehe. Looking forward to joining the convo from here on out!
Thanks! I don't know what I have! They were sold as "mixed pullets." My friend that raises chicks is taking a guess at either red or golden sex links...whatever that means :) Here is a pic, go...
Hi there! I'm new here :) Forgive me, but I just can't read all 1115 pages of this thread to get to know everyone :) Haha!
I currently have 6 2 week (approx) chicks in a brooder, right on the TX/LA border (Bridge City, to be exact). We're excited to be new chicken owners!
Thanks everyone for the welcome! I'll check out that TX thread, ellie. Girls are still doing great. We added a perch to their brooder & made it bigger to give them more room. Starting to wonder when to move them outside. I guess that's the next thing I'll search on here!
We got our first chicks this year, too! They are about 2 weeks old right now. We got 6 mixed pullets from the local tractor supply, but my friend guessed they are mostly sex links. I'm brand new to chickens, but heard they are good layers which is great! We're supposed to be getting some from...
This is a really neat idea! You have a beautiful garden, too. Do your chickens eat the squash and tomatoes or do they grow too tall for them to reach? It's a great way to get double use out of some garden plants!
I'm just joining in to say thank you for posting this! I grew up feeding/raising chickens the same way you mentioned, and all of these different options are getting overwhelming. Starter feed? Grower? Layer? Grit? I'm sure I'll figure it all out as I go (my chicks are less than 2 weeks and...
Hi everyone! I finally joined BYC tonight. I've been reading articles and posts from the site for at least a year now while we prepped for the idea of getting chickens, and tonight, since we are officially chicken-owners now, I decided to join :)
We just bought 6 baby chicks from a local farm...
