My Silkies who lived with my layers learned to adapt-so they chose to roost most of the time. My quality birds have the digs all to themselves, and they sleep in a pile on the floor. We don't even give those ones a roost. We already know that their balance is terrible.

Yup...Silkies can also have it rough as well. Very popular at shows.
But the general rule of thumb is to find a breed that you like best. Anyone can give you the name of a breed but finding one that speaks to you will make exhibiting and working with the birds more worthwhile.
Don't do it. Layer feed has more calcium and should not be fed to young chicks. I made this mistake with one of my hens, and she had alot of problems later in life. She died as a result, at only 4 years old.
