MARCH Hatch-A-Long 2015: Please Read the First Post to JOIN the H-A-L

Ugh! I'm so nervous about it. It is definitely not in a drafty spot. I don't know why it is doing that. I took the plug out of the hole in the top. I wonder if I should put it back in?

On another note, we rescued a pregnant kitty a week ago, and she "hatched" her 5 babies on Monday night!

MARCH Hatch-A-Long 2015: Please Read the First Post to JOIN the H-A-L

Hi there, I put my eggs in the incubator on Saturday morning, so today Thursday is day 5? I have an IncuView, and I've been aiming to keep the humidity around 35%. Almost every morning it is down to 10% and I have to add water. Is that normal? The temperature is fine. I was going to wait...

MARCH Hatch-A-Long 2015: Please Read the First Post to JOIN the H-A-L

Hi there! I'd love to join you all. This will be my first time hatching eggs. I am mostly excited, but a little bit nervous too. I have an IncuView incubator. My eggs came in the mail today, Cream Legbars and Ameraucanas, a dozen in all. I candled them and there do not seem to be any...

Meat chicken died before we could butcher, okay to eat?

Just feed in the crop. She was def too small and slow, with her leg issue, to catch a mouse. I think we're safe to eat her. Thanks all

Meat chicken died before we could butcher, okay to eat?

I guess we're just a little worried that since we didn't kill it, maybe it could've been sick, and thus unfit to eat? So, the extra pink is because she couldn't bleed out, so she'll taste a little off?

Meat chicken died before we could butcher, okay to eat?

I've got 24 6 week old meat birds, a mix of Cornish X, Pioneer and Red Ranger. We were planning to cull 2 of the Cornish X this weekend because they are having leg issues and it seems like it is very hard for them to get around. When I went out to feed them this morning, one of the two was...

At what age and how do you restrict feed for meat birds?

My first batch of meat chickens are almost 3 weeks old. I've got 11 Cornish X, and 6 each of Red Ranger and Pioneer. Thus far they've had pretty free access to feed. At first, I was feeding solely fermented feed, but in the past week, I've been offering both dry and fermented. I think in...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Cute! Mine are 2 weeks today. I've lost 3, out of 29. I don't know what i'm doing wrong. :( I ordered from McMurray, and got 12 Cornish X, 6 Pioneer, 6 Red Ranger, 2 Dark Cornish and 2 Speckled Sussex, and they threw in a free "rare breed," which we think is a Brahma. All of the deaths...

100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

kuntrygirl, why did you decide to skin your chickens? I am just wondering because I am new to this. I read the thread and saw that you had a whizbang type of plucker made.

    percent protein in feed?

The "starter" I'm feeding now, to my 6 day old meat birds, is 21% protein. The company that sells it, Countryside Organics, also makes a "grower" that is 19% protein. Should I stick with the 21% percent their whole lives or switch to the 19% at some point? I'm soaking/fermenting their...

Feeding Broilers Organic starter then finisher

I have read so many conflicting things about what to add to the feed to ferment it. I've read just water, stirring and time, apple cider vinegar, whey, yogurt. I've read reasons why all of the above are bad or unnecessary. So far I added a splash of ACV at the beginning and now I'm just...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Can I join you all here? We've had laying hens for years, but just got our first batch of meat birds on Monday. We got 12 Cornish X, 6 Pioneer and 6 Red Rangers, from McMurray Hatchery. We've lost one of the Cornish so far. We've also got 2 Dark Cornish, 2 Speckled Sussex, and (we think) a...

    Meat birds and children

I have 5 kids- 12yo, 9yo, 6yo, 4yo, and 17 month old. We've had laying hens for years, but started thinking about raising meat chickens about a year ago. At first the kids, especially our oldest, were very, very resistant. We have spent A LOT of time over this past year talking about why we...

Feeding Broilers Organic starter then finisher

My meat birds are 5 days old, and I'm feeding them Countryside Organics Organic Soy-Free Poultry Starter Feed http://www.countrysideorganics.com/product.php?productid=136 I'm soaking/fermenting it. I'm hoping I can afford to feed them this their whole lives. I get it locally for about...

100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

Could you guys recommend a scale? Also, would it be ok for me to start a thread here chronicling and comparing how my meat birds (cornish x. pioneer and red ranger) grow?

100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

Phew! It's taken me a few days, but I finally have read the whole thread. I've had laying hens for 4 years or so, but this year I'm finally taking the plunge into meat birds. I've got 24 coming on Monday- 12 Cornish Cross, 6 Red Ranger and 6 Pioneer, all from McMurray. I need to get my...
