So, help me with some confusion. I find chicken layer feed to be much closer to the recommended nutrition content than the various game bird feed. Exceptions being layer feed is higher in calcium. And reading the nutrition labels on the various game bird feeds, they are all lower than what is...
My blue heeler would chase off or catch the fox, for sure. She wants to chase, catch and or eat anything (people and chickens included) that is not in her "circle of friends." Which is a very small circle.
I scored 6 crates from work, enough plywood to floor and wall up two coops I plan to build. The wood for the floor is OSB from here in the US. However, the plywood I plan to use on the sides are from China, India or some other country. I do not have a clue what kind of wood. It does have a...
You need a Blue Heeler. LOL Mine would not tolerate "cowgirl" and her little mutt.
Trained at a young age to get along with chickens. I am working with mine to like my chickens because I did not have chickens when she was young. However, she does not care for people outside of her "family"...
Be careful. I have used electric wire around the yard fence trying to keep a dog from digging out. I have found rabbits, squirrels and snakes dead laying across the wire. Probably kill a chicken pretty quick.
As soon as they start putting on feathers for buff orpingtons and barred rocks. The easiest way to tell is the pullets grows tail feathers much sooner than rooster.
The black and white ones appear to have a rose comb and the black/white bars appear jagged. Looks Dominicker. Barred rocks have a single comb and bars are more defined.
I would go with the buff orpingtons and barred rocks. The buffs are broody and good mommies. And as I understand, so are the rocks. Of course I'm biased, as all I have are these two breeds. Wonderfully calm chickens.
Chupacabra!!
Anytime we have such a chicken death, I blame the chupacabra.
Seriously, our biggest predators are owls and coons (raccoons for you urbanites lol) at night and hawks in daylight. Dogs and snakes are a possibility day or night.
I wrap the lower 2 foot of my run in netting...
We just started a little flock after about 4 years without a chicken. About mid March we got 3 buff orpington pullets and a roo, 3 barred rock pullets. Today I picked up a barred rock roo and another pullet. These must be the gentlest two breeds. We had buffs before and loved them, but I...
We are starting a small flock after about a 4 year layoff. We have had buff orpingtons, white leggings and red sexlinks. The buffs were by far the best natured chickens. So, this time we got buff orpingtons and barred rocks. They are around 6 weeks old and the barred rocks seems to be as...
Netting is the only way to go. We have been using it for a few years. Discovered it by accident. My elderly parents put it around a coop to keep some chicks from getting out. Quickly realized this stuff works great for catching snakes. They keep it around all of their coop/pen and I keep it...
