We were at a local feed store last Sat. and there one one tiny ducking all by itself - it's a crested duck as we have an adult one outside, along with 2 pekin and one drake mallard...
I got the crested baby and knew it does not do good alone...went to TSC and you had to buy at least two...
and upon further inspection - they may not be production hens...I see they have a black tail...maybe a buckeye...then they could just be mixed breed but they are identical...dark red with black tail feathers - very young, so hard to tell..:) Remarks on buckeye say lowest on pecking order, so...
thanks to everyone! This is the start of day 3....only harrassment is inside the coop and over food...I throw out extra scratch on the ground to them while the older hens are out in the pasture browsing...they are coming out for just a bit and then run back in...think it will all work...
We had 3 red sex link hens and lost one due to an accident...two chickens are not producing enough, so hubby brought home two production red pullets...we only have one coop and the two adult hens are being aggressive to the new young ones...is this something that will work itself out? Any...
These are the first chickens I have ever had being a city gal turned country - got three 19 mos old pullets from our local feed store...waited patiently for that first egg...now all 3 lay every day, never a problem, sweet and they are pets...I will replace any with the same breed as they are...
LOL...I remember when my young pullets started that - I was alarmed and posted on here thinking something was wrong....thinking between a week and 2 weeks the laying began and I have gotten steady eggs every day now...got mine in early april...really enjoying the eggs and my friends and...
Good News,
Well, putting my hens back in their coop/grass area while we are at work worked...took 2 days but we are now back to having 3 eggs daily with shells and in the nest boxes! :)
Hubby put chickens up at 4 AM this morning when he went out to feed horses...2 were roosting and one chicken was out in the horse pasture just sitting on the ground? He got her in the coop but she would not roost...sat on the ground...we got one egg today...we searched everywhere...how can this...
thanks! Yes, we have enjoyed about 4 doubles and one hen lays a larger egg than the other two but are same breed (red sex link) and age...they were 19 mos old pullets we got in April...took about a month or so to start laying...just want to make sure we are doing something wrong...they are...
Thanks! The coop is covered and therefore darker and shady, i.e., cooler for eggs that get collected at evening when we get home instead of out in the sun...:) and the times of laying have changed...two would lay around 7-8 AM and one would lay 11-12...but now, my husband goes out to feed the...
We have been enjoying steady laying from each of our 3 hens - every time in one of the nest boxes made for them...now...in the last several days...things are changing...first...eggs are being laid anywhere...not in the nest boxes, and for 2 days in a row now, one chicken is laying an egg with NO...
I am happy to report, that coming back home weds. late afternoon, collected 10 eggs and tested them...all stayed flat on bottom of cup...we have eaten some and they are still good! :)
We will be leaving for vacation tomorrow, and will collect tomorrow's eggs, but will have 3 days of eggs before we get back - the coop is in the shade and never gets hot like out in the sun...large tree covers the coop top...will the eggs still be ok to take in and eat or ditch them?

I agree! I have 3 hens that we got at 19 weeks...they lay beautiful brown eggs and I am getting 3 every single day! For just the two of us...we have eggs to share! Friendly! They are pets....I love petting and holding them! Very sweet and happy hens - my first time ever to have chickens and I...
