We lost our favorite OB last fall :( her name was Goldie and she was amazing!! We have a BO roo who is 7 month and he seems very sweet and gentle so far :)
My Goldie with 2 day old silkies I tossed under her yesterday- and Cookies who has the two surviving BO chicks that Goldie hatched out 2 days ago!!!
Funny thing Cookies did not accept the three new silkies but since Goldie already had two chicks I tried putting them with her and she accepted...
So
Sorry you lost one :(. You hen is BEAUTIFUL!!! Love her coloring!!! I am such a sucker for the laid back and extra friendly BO chickens I haven't tested out too many other breeds- but I may have to reconsider!! So many on here have amazing colored hens!!
They were Buff Orpington eggs.
I checked in the morning and saw that some eggs were pipped, and that one was 1/2 way out and dead (I took this one). I left the rest, it was later that night or the next morning when I saw 2 more dead one 1/2 way out of the shell and the other 3/4 of the way...
So sad!!! I have 2 Brodie's. one is a 2 year old first time and the other is my BO Goldie who hatched a clutch last spring. Well I had 1 dead chick 1/2 way hatched last night (from my new mama)- and another this morning 3/4 hatched and died :-/. So I put the rest of her eggs under Goldie...
My Buff Orpington has FINALLY decided to go broody this year!!!! YAY:) She is 2 and hatched out a clutch last spring. It's been soooo cold here in MN, guess her instinct took a while longer to kick into gear. Well, It just so happens my Black Laced Wy. (also 2) went broody too (first time)...
DEFINITELY pets... cause we care for them and spoil them, and if/when one gets grabbed by a predator (ours free range on over 5 acres) it is heartbreaking!!! In return for the care and love we provide, they provide eggs, and almost everyday we get an egg from each, so I assume they are also...
Same thing happened to my broody BO last spring. She sat for 3 weeks on unfertile eggs and then didn't accept a "night swap of eggs for chicks" and was sitting the next mornin hen I checked on them (chicks on opposite side of coop). So I bought hatching eggs and she sat and hatched them out. She...
Each hen is different on wether it will "adopt" another's chick. I had a broody hen (no roo at the time) last spring who wouldn't budge off her nest so 2 weeks later I got her day old chicks...tried to place them under her at night and the next morning she only allowed 1 of the 6 near her, and...
••Thing I never thought I would hear•• (Hubby to me) "You do know they aren't going to answer you back, right?". Ok ok I talk to them a little more then he thinks is normal ;). I can't help it they are sweet!!
