    Quail with no eyes

I am sure he had other issues as it wasn't only the lack of eyes but the deformed beak that challenged him. He likely had other internal defects.

I hatched some Russian Orloffs (pic)

I have two that look like masculine Buff Orpington chicks, and two that have more of the chipmunk pattern in their fuzz. What do yours look like? I'm surprised you found Orloffs at TSC, that's pretty cool.

    Quail with no eyes

I've been away from BYC for a bit but hate it when I find a thread without a conclusion. So here's an update. Magoo passed away. He did in fact get more and more dependent. Because Quail eat and drink like constant little snackers he failed to thrive as we were only available to assist him 3-4...

    Quail with no eyes

Rewarding... you bet. Watching him this evening we noticed him doing something new, he puts his head up and and then tracks it back and forth a little bit like the carriage on an old type writer. Then he will run but stop before hitting anything hard. It looks like he is listening to his...

    Quail with no eyes

After some extended observation it is clear that Magoo is not getting as much food or water as the other chicks. I decided to intervene tonight and taught him how to drink water from my finger. I figure I will supplement his efforts a little to keep him nourished. I have decided that we will...

    Quail with no eyes

Water is no problem. He figured it out all by himself. Food is hit and miss but we have left plenty laying around. He is very quick. Most people looking in on him would probably not notice his blindness at this point. It hasn't been 24 hrs. yet but I am very hopeful. He seems to be doing well...

    Quail with no eyes

So far Magoo is doing well. He doesn't seem to know what it means to be blind. He walks and runs around bumping into things, pecks at the floor for food, drinks from the water dish, and cuddles with the other Quail. We will keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't get bullied. Edit: I...

Video of my latest hatch - Quail

I don't have any tips except to have food and water ready for them they are hatched hungry. We tried a couple of different watering methods but settled on the standard quail font that can be found at most Farm and Garden stores.

    Quail with no eyes

Here's a picture of the little guy. So far he seems to be doing well with the other chicks in the hatcher but I know he will soon need to eat and drink.

    Quail with no eyes

Well I have been busy hatching chickens Quail and even have turkeys in the incubator. I currently have about 40 quail hatching and watched one hatch that does not have any eyes. There are depressions where they should be but no slits, no dark spots under the skin. the chick also has a beak...
