I separated a few hens and a roo from my main flock to a smaller coop and run. They have been together for 4 weeks. I pulled the roo out yesterday and put him back in the main flock, having met my breeding goal. I wanted to give my hens a break and left them in the smaller run
The roo I...
wow, thanks for that. I appreciate you taking the time to anwser is such detail.
If you were to be tracking your lineage from parent through multiple generations, what would you call the parents generation, out of curiosity? just parent generation or pg?
I wanted to ask a few questions about chicken lineage.
When you have first generation breeder stock on your farm from an outside supplier is this considered f1? Or, is that generations offspring f1?
How about the same question, but when you cross breed?
When considering the cock for your...
I thought I would post a few pictures. now that things are starting to grow on the roof.
I am happy with our decision to layer the organic layers like we did. Although only about a quarter of what I planted has taken root as I believe the compost is a bit strong yet, the roof is looking green...
So I said I'd post a few shots of the inside, here ya go. My resident flea market...
The perches are made with a couple pallet runners, I obviously have a lot of them. This was just a temporary quick fix so I could get my hens in there, but they have kind of grown on me. Originally I...
I mentioned the egg patio before. Here is a better picture, just remember I made this from left over mortar mix that had been sitting outside in the rain for several months.
Here is a picture of what the back and side of the coop look like with the garden bed on it.
On a side note, I don't think I ever took the time to explain our venting.
On the back and sides of the coop I left the top 2 feet open to allow for very good ventilation. I used some hardware cloth to...
I got the rest of the growth medium on the roof a few weekends ago and am finally getting around to posting...
I decided to add a layer of flashing to the top side of the roof bed. Originally I was going to use furring strips to do this, figuring I could get away with using a single 10 foot 2x8...
thanks for the insight. I was hoping use half the clutch to stock our freezer, but that can come later.
I like the idea if culling later, but I'm looking at a 50:50 cockerell to pullet, will that be a problem having too many roos and aggression toward eachother?
When making selection on who to cull and who to save what traits are desired in the cockerells you plan to breed?
I am confident I could make a good roo selection later in life but am not certain on what to look for at 3 months. Should I wait longer for certain traits to present themselves...
The house is done, sort of, we have been in it since just before Christmas.I finished painting the exterior a few weeks ago when it was warm, and still need to knock out a few finishing details inside and landscape the outside.
Thank you for all the compliments, kind words go a long way.
I...
you may not need to go though all the commotion of building an enclosed run. Maybe someone can back me up on this, but I have heard that several crisscrossing layers of fishing line will deter a bird of prey.:idunno

I think the only limiting factor would be your own ingenuity. You could use chain link fence doors if you used larger pipe, or you could sink 2 wood posts and build a wood door if you came up with a way to connect the emt to the wood post. Sound like a fun project!
I guess I ment emt. I have never really considered what material it was, just figured it was aluminum...
Your t-post to emt clamp is pretty cool! But why go through all the effort? Do you think you could have just gone to a 1.5 inch pipe and sank the emt directly? Maybe even go so far as to...
