    Lone chick hatched.

Out of 13 eggs only one chick hatched. We did have her (I am willing her to be a HER) with chicks that were two weeks older the first day and they were all fine but they went out to the farm today. We were lucky because one of the broody hens was hatching guinea keets while we were there. We...

    July Hatch-a-long

Tomorrow is day 21 for the 4 eggs that made it to lockdown. This is my first attempt with shipped eggs. Got 13 and only 4 were viable at day 18. I am kind of disappointed. I let them sit before putting them in the incubator and didn't use the turner the first couple of days. We will see...

What did you do in the garden today?

We had roasted beets and red onions from the garden last night. The kids have picked pea pods almost every day this week. Fresh tomatoes are about a week away! A rabbit got in our garden and ate the purple bean leaves. The plants seem to be recovering and regrowing though. I will harvest...

    Taking Chicks Outside To Play

We take our chicks out and let them scratch around in the garden. We have a wire fence around the garden to keep rabbits out. They had a blast in the evening yesterday. They are a week old and on medicated starter.

What did you do in the garden today?

I am planning to take the kids out to pick pea pods today. We have week old chicks that we will take to the garden too. It is the first time that they have been outside. There are only 6 of them so my kids will keep an eye on them. Need to check to see if the tomatoes need to be tied up...

We have eggs that go into lockdown tomorrow! Can't wait to see what hatches. Rooster is a GLW but there are several kinds of hens, GLW and Buff Orpington's and a few Black Australorp. We did hatch 6 chicks a few weeks ago and 5 were GLW and one GLW/Buff mix. Can't wait to see the babies!

Hi everyone! I am new to BYC. We live in Loudoun County but keep our chickens on a farm in Rappahannock County. I am incubating a second batch of eggs right now, day 13 and the chicks will be Golden Laced Wynadottes or mixed GLW/Buff Orpingtons. We keep the chicks here at the house for a...

    Hatch-A-Long (May-June)

We have 11 eggs in the incubator now. This is day 13. I checked them yesterday and it looks like the majority are developing. I could see movement in 9 of the eggs. The eggs were from our chickens on the farm. We are hatching at our suburban house and may keep 3-4 of the chicks. The rest...

    Raising chickens against zoning laws!

Our county rules on chickens are not very defined. We live in an area that used to be rural but is currently experiencing heavy development. We are checking our HOA rules and planning to get 3 hens. I have 11 eggs in the incubator now (we hatch them for a farmer friend). He has plenty of...
