Unfortunately, we never did find out.
The vet couldn't identify it either, and referred us to a bird specialist an hour away. Sorry to say, that was not worth it for us. Our vet did give us some She did give us some chlorhex to clean it and some silver sulfadiazine to coat it. Our trouble...
Ooooo...Haven't thought of electrifying the fence... We have to do that for our garden because of deer, rabbits, turkeys, etc, so it could be done. There's been no evidence of holes in the ground or fence, but that's not to say we just haven't found it. The strangest part is that our flock is...
We let the girls roam freely during the day & close it up at night. The coop has a dirt floor & 3' wood wallsthat then have 3' chicken wire to the roof. There is a 20'x30' run with 7' chicken wire attached to the coop. We did bury about 6" of the wire in their outside space to help deter...
July was a tough month for us...We caught a 5' black snake in the nesting boxes, 2 possums, & lost a Barred Rock to what we're guessing is a mink or muskrat two nights ago, from the 'damage'. Any ideas in how to protect our ladies better?
Thank you! All of this is new & I appreciate the help! 14 of our girls were a year old in April & have been laying for about a year. We have some 7 week old chicks, but doubt they're to the laying stage yet.The black snake we found in the nesting boxes yesterday night explain some of the shock...
I found a 5' black snake in my nesting boxes today. My Husband was with me, thank goodness! We normally take the relocating mind set too, esoecially on these because they kill copperheads, but one of my chicks disappeared last week & my egg count has dropped from 11/day to 4 or 5 in the last 2...
I have a fella who buys eggs from me that insists I need another rooster. I have 14 hens & sell him about 5 dozen a week, but he says if there were more males I'd get more eggs... He's an old timer orifinally from WVA, so I figured he'd know better, but he's serious!
We let our hens roam any where they want on our 8 acres, but they stay pretty close to the coop. We do have predators, possums, hawks, etc, but they're smart about them too & keep to the woods or have a tree nearby. This is my first flock & have been amazed at how smart they are.
The crack is all the way around the egg, but it is still 'solid'. The tiny round one was with it that day. Our hens were 1 this April. Not sure if it's a Barred Rock, Buff, or Sexlink laying, we have all three.
Not unless they found it. They roam on free on about 2 of our 6 acres. We do keep them supplied with Southern States layer/breeder crumble & field corn, & are chemical free, but who knows what they might find in the woods.
We've had 2 eggs in the last 3 days that look like they tried to crack coming out(?), & have a bubble or flat spot. Today the weird egg had a tiny round really dark one next to it. Ideas?
OK... trying to put this out here again hoping for advice. Our girl with the lump was all bloody this morning. Don't know if it was her or one if our others that got to her, but it didn't look good when I let them out. Show's still showing no behavioral changes, still laying, eating, scratching...
We lost one of our Barred Rocks & one of our Sex Links unexpectedly too. Both instances were about 6 months apart, but we left for the day & all was fine, came home & found them. I can only suggest you make sure the coop is clean & that there were no wounds. Sometimes, they just don't make it, &...
Sorry about Liza. My husband laughs at me when I cry over any of our chickens, but he grew up farming...Sounds to me like Gracie's broody. Without a rooster, it won't matter, but that's the sitting. We have 8 2wk old chicks running around our place & they're wonderful!
She seems to be OK today too, just walked right out with everybody else when I opened the coop, but the lump is still there. Don't know if I should be concerned or not. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Hello! My husband noticed that one of our Barred Rock's feathers looked funny so we checked her tonight after she got on the roost. At the base of her neck, between her shoulders, is a golf ball sized hard lump. she was out all day in the yard with the other girls and seems to be fine. It's...
