All of my hens have stopped laying. Two have reasonable excuses (one orpington is broody and the other mixed breed is raising baby chicks.) But the other two (different ages, another oprington and mixed breed) have just stopped for no apparent reason. They did lay pretty good through the winter...
Thanks! That's a lot for eggs to survive through, but I'm glad they did! Seems chicken eggs can be pretty resilient.
Our rooster is a lavender orpington. Two of the eggs came from buff orpington hens, and the other is from the broody mama, who I think is an Easter Egger mix (not real sure.) She...
We have a chick this morning! I can't believe it. It's black and silver, with gray eyes. Wish I could post a pic, but the option isn't here that I can find. Hopefully more chicks to come!
My broody hen was sitting on eggs when we decided to move her to a safer, more protected spot. We moved her/them at night and I stayed with her a while to make sure she would stay with the new nest, but when we woke up, she had abandoned the eggs to move back to the old nest. I don't know how...
I do want her sitting on the eggs, and we have 6 nesting boxes, so it's not like there's no room. I imagine she is intimidating the other hens, so they're laying elsewhere.
Not sure I want to take out the goat's bedding (he is an only goat until late spring, so he has no one to cuddle and keep...
I accidentally broke one of the eggs my broody hen is sitting on. I feel terrible. But since it was already broken, I opened it up to see how they were developing and wanted to share. This egg is about a week old. You can already see the wings and of course the eyes. She has 9 more eggs...
My alpha hen went broody last week, and I noticed that the other hens seemed to have stopped laying. However, today I discovered they've been laying in the goat's dog-gloo house, which is way up under the deck and difficult (for me) to get to.
Any ideas to get them laying in the coop again...
Thank you! My broody hen happens to be the alpha, so that's good. So far, she has been the only one of my 4 hens to go broody. Our coop is small and sits on top of the small run, so I'm not sure if we can isolate the mom and chicks inside the coop or run. We may have to prepare another place...
One of our hens went broody this past week so we are letting her sit on the eggs and hopefully hatch some out. We're in the mid-south where the weather depends on the day. We had ice and snow last week, and it will be in the 60's this weekend.
What are the chances of this being successful? Will...
When we let the chickens out this morning, we noticed our rooster has a bloody throat. He is the only rooster with 4 hens. What on earth could have happened? I don't have any Blue Coat. Is there anything else I can put on him? Thanks!
