Best hatchery to get show Silkies?

My daughter loves silkies and are looking for a few to purchase with her egg money! We were thinking Cackle Hatchery? Also, we live in East TX and would like to get involved with a poultry showing group but have not been able to find one within 100 miles. Any suggestions on how to start a...

    Broiler Adventure II

Quote: There are definitely others on this site that are much more knowledgeable than me but this is our experience. The meat is going to be naturally firmer just because of the exercise the broilers get. Being penned up in a cage doesn't allow for much muscle toning. However, with that being...

I really like the wheel idea vs. the dolly. I am trying to design something where I can move it in any direction without turning it around. We have already installed ihooks on all four sides so we can latch the pull handle to any of them. Yesterday evening, we drilled a couple of holes to...

    Chicken Tractor Wheels

I really like this idea. We are currently using furniture movers if we are moving it by ourself, however, where there are two of us, one works the dolly and the other pulls the handle.

Hmm, I may have to try this. How many birds do you have? We have done the math and right now it is costing us about $5.64 per bird. Next time we will definitely buy the feed in bulk.

Kildare49, I would love for you to explain your fermented feed process. I was experimenting with their feed and I think I put too much corn. I think I stunted their growth a bit so we went back to straight grower/finisher. It is just a bit pricey for this many birds.

Wow! Thanks so much guys and gals for the food feed back. We are experimenting this year as well. Last year we used grower/finisher after the 3rd week all the way up to processing. This year, with so many, we used starter feed for the first 3 weeks and now we are doing a mix of...

    My Hen is Walking Backwards

I have a chicken doing the same thing. Her head looks a little swollen but there is no mucus or drainage from eyes. She can/does walk normal and then out of no where, she bends her head down as if she is gong to eat something and then takes like 5-7 steps backwards. She is a young layer. I...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

This is very interesting and I am excited to try it. We have raised chickens for about 4 yrs, thanks to a homeschool project! We now have chicken fever :) We raised our first 50 broilers last year with great success, considering we were learning as we went. This year, we ordered 150, which...

What are the best breeds of chickens to raise for there meat?

Just Fluff, we ordered our 50 Freedom Rangers from http://www.freedomrangerhatchery.com/purchase and were pleased. They arrived very quickly and healthy in the heat of the summer, July. We kept them in a broiler pen for the first 3 weeks feeding them chick starter and then we began to let...

What are the best breeds of chickens to raise for there meat?

Interesting! I for one do not like the cornish, mainly because of the $$$ of food they eat and all the medical issues they have. I really have nothing to compare the Freedom Rangers with since we have only processed one flock. We did it at 11+ weeks and they definitely had were good in size...
