Feather mites. They live solely on the chicken, are too tiny to see and Sevin dust didn't do anything. I have many wild birds living around my property so that's probably where they came from.
Finally got a handle on this problem. Ivermectin (Ivomec) in their water seems to have done the trick. The boys have new feathers growing in and they aren't itching & scratching constantly.
Whew!! Just in time for the 100+ degree weather.
Yes they had brief bouts as "teen-agers" but they are inseparable now. Where one goes the other must follow or there is much grumbling. They are not the same breed, Tillsworthy is a large mutt. Keswick is small. Not positive on his breed either. They are more pet than rooster. Tills is big &...
The diet seems to be fine. Forgot to add they get layer crumbles. My three hens are beautiful, AND separated from the affected Roos. The Roos combs & wattles are red. My concern is I've never seen the mites. I've done the white sheet trick to try and see what falls off & nothing. Been in at...
Both of my Roosters have this going on. My hens are separated from them, but are still being treated just in case.
The feed is cabbage, carrots, cracked corn, BOSS, oats, red & white millet, dried meal worms and crushed up cat food.
The two Roos are pets. I know insane, but they are good boys...
I'll be applying the 4th round of Sevin dust to my chickens today. I have applied it using a stocking as a powder puff. Every 7 days. I have cleaned their coop & run, and dusted it as well. The above photo is what is happening to them. I have checked them at night for lice/mites and seen...
I think after some further reading, reflection and watching Harry the hawk take off with a cottontail that I'll build them a larger run about 40 feet sq. run water out to it and plant a nice garden, no cactus. That should be nice for 18 chickens.
I'm thinking about letting mine free range but... I live in the desert with a fair amount of predators.
No fences just wide open spaces.
Anybody else have chickens in the desert?
I have mountain lions to golden eagles to rattlesnakes to every kind of ant, not to mention the cactus especially...
Wow that roo is a keeper!
I'm new to this and in actuality fell into it by rescuing 2 "chicks" that turned out to be Roos. One is a mutt of unknown origin the other is a a Gallus Gallus ( I think). A week ago I adopted 2 hens, that went horribly. One had EYP & had to be euthanized the next day...
That is what I was afraid of. She was in a wire cage alone, I took her out of pity. From the one long spur she has I'd say she is pretty old. Well I will give the old girl a good send off then. Thanks for your help.
Poor thing stinks to high heaven. She couldn't walk very well so I was clipping her nails when I noticed this. It's extremely yellow like an egg yolk. The vent is very swollen. She is listless, hunched over, walks funny. Basically she is tore up from the floor up. Both wings have huge missing...
They are crowing and definitely have spurs coming in. So far so good they still cuddle together. Some arguments over who gets to crow. A new behavior is they like to jump on each others back. Silly boys. Hope you get clarification soon. Now back to building the coop so they can crow outside!
My husband and I rescued a couple of chicks wandering in the desert. Now that they are about 6-8 weeks old I think they are Roosters. The little nodules on the inside of the ankles are growing. ACK! They sleep together and nuzzle each other so I'm hoping for happy adults. I guess I'd better...
