    Hatched too early?

After doing more reading last night on the internet, I wondered about lice, also. So, back out to the coop at 1 in the morning to check for bugs. I checked all the roosting chickens and no crawly things I could see (looked at vents and around neck). I looked at the mama hen and saw that the...

    Hatched too early?

Wondering if anyone else has had this experience. I had 6 eggs under a hen, today was day 17. Before going to work, about 1:30 I checked on her and found there was a completely hatched, fully formed, egg sac absorbed-but dead chick under her. And one of the other eggs had pipped a huge hole...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I bought a full dozen from a lady that had hens and roosters. They will be "mutts" :)

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

There is actually an article and subsequent postings on how to promote broodiness in hens on this forum. A study was done where they placed aluminum foil on the top and back of the nesting box and it is supposed to promote the secretion of the hormone that causes the hen to go broody (if I...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Newbie question!!! I have a broody with a dozen fertile eggs under her. I have her in her own quiet location with food and water and she's sitting on them religiously...to the point that she won't move. I don't believe she even gets up to eat or drink as there are no droppings in her pen at...

Will my hens keep attacking other hens?

Sorry I haven't posted back. I have 20 birds since the one died and the camper is approximatly 8x10-maybe 8x12. They've all established their pecking order now with no further "major" issues. I really believe it's the red sex links, they just seem to be more aggressive than the other birds.

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Thank you! If she is not on the nest I created in the morning, I'll let her go with the rest of the flock. I was just afraid that once the chicks hatched they would fall off that high area. Sounds like it'll be easier to move mama and babies once they hatch :)

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I could use some help in this area. I have a BA that has gone broody (1 year old-originally a TSC chick). She's been broody for about 1 to 1 1/2 weeks now. I have someone saving some fertile eggs for me and planned to put them under her. Unfortunately, she is nesting on a high shelf, about 3...

Will my hens keep attacking other hens?

I apologize if this a redundant post, but...I started with 7 hens and when they were about 6 months old (mixed NHR and BA), integrated 9 (mixed variety) 3 and 1/2 month old hens with them with no major problems. Typical sorting of the pecking order. My neighbor then gave me 5 Red Sex Link hens...

    Salmon Faverolles

Hello, I know this last post is a year old, but...I was wondering now how everyone is doing with mixing these birds with their flock? I have a mixed flock of pullets and layers (pullets are about 4 months old now) of NH Reds, Red Sex Link, Austrolorp, Barred Rock, Americauna, Brabanter, and...

    Looking for opinions...Roos or Hens??

Well, the 3 were all Cockerals (the other brabanter was a pullet), so the owner was switched them out for me with another Americauna and 2 Salmon Faverolle pullets. I'm really liking the Faverolles-they're very sweet so far! Again, thank you to all!

    Looking for opinions...Roos or Hens??

Thank you everyone for the input! I come here to check for advice and read others postings before I even check my chicken books on hand...great site and helpful people! The chickens are going back today and coming home with some pullets in their place :)

    Looking for opinions...Roos or Hens??

The 1st one is an EasterEgger, I bought 2 (guaranteed pullets) but his tail feathers just strike me as that of a rooster. I might take all of them back up to the hatchery and have him check them for me! lol That owner is exchanging any roosters I have for pullets about the same age that he...

    Looking for opinions...Roos or Hens??

The saddle feathers are more rounded and shorter than the other brabanter. I'm assuming the saddle feathers are the around the tail feathers? (newbie chicken owner!)

    Looking for opinions...Roos or Hens??

I was pretty sure the brabanter in the front was a hen. The tails feathers are not as long or as "spiky" as the one in the back.

    Looking for opinions...Roos or Hens??

Hoping someone can let me know their opinion. I'm sure the Polish and Brabanter (2nd picture in the back) are roos, but I'm wondering about the Americauna (1st pic). I'm taking the roos back to where I purchased them from in exchange for pullets of about the same age (about 3 1/2 months)...

Welcome Gail! This is a great place for advice and ideas, I haven't posted much, but when I have a question everyone is helpful and respectful when answering. And gathering the eggs is the best part! My 2 children (and myself) love going out a few times a day just to see if there might be one...

    Flemish??

When I blow into his fur I see the grays, white and black...but by bands, I'm assuming you mean in layers? And this is just kind of mixed but the white is more towards his body. His cage right now is 4'x2'. However, there are 4 identical hutches, so we were going to take the dividing board...

    Flemish??

So, we bought this rabbit for a whopping $5 at the Livestock Auction. It was labeled "Flemish Giant Buck." There were 3 others that were identical to this rabbit but about 1 1/2 times as large labeled Flemish Does. I know you take your chances at the auction, but my daughter (and myself) took...
