We've decided to put in an underground fence to keep the dogs in the yard and away from the barn. I also use electric netting for the birds during the warm months. In the winter, they hang out in the farmyard which is entirely fenced off.
I have years of experience with dogs, just not with...
My six month old German Shepherd puppy went on a killing spree and killed twelve of my hens a couple days ago. He's been around the chickens since I brought him home at 7 weeks old and ignored them for the most part. He would chase a few halfheartedly but never tried to bite them. Now it's...

That's a good question!
You know...I had to think about that for a minute. She might be laying her eggs there and not dropping them, but after I thought about it, the spot where the egg is doesn't have any kind of bowl shape or depression like a hen was setting there. Wouldn't they...
I have 6 RIR hens that are coming up on their 2nd birthdays. One of them, (I assume it's just one) is dropping her egg off the roost bar onto the coop floor. Lucky for me it's pretty deep with bedding and none of her eggs have broken yet. But I don't get why she's doing it. Is it just a...
We used the vacuum sealer for our birds. We're finishing up last years birds and they are just as fresh as the day they were done. It's been 8 months. I ordered more bags and we're ready for the next batch. They're getting done next week.
LOVE THEM! I couldn't live out here without 'em. Chickens will eat the fly predator "eggs" before they hatch so you have to keep them out of their reach. I get mine from Spalding Labs too. Visit the link to their website and you'll learn everything you need to know.
Don't wait because...
Bumping this up and adding a question....
I saw a printout comparing the nutritional value of home raised eggs vs store bought somewhere on this forum. It was formatted to fit into an egg carton and had interesting info comparing the eggs. I think it was originally came from Mother Earth...
They have free choice Layena and I have oyster shell out for them too. They free range and get assorted bugs and greens in season. It's been too cold for them to catch many bugs but that will change this weekend with highs in the upper 70/ low 80's. Woohoo!
Hi neighbors from Shelbyville, MI!
To the OP-- I don't have anything for you but wanted to suggest you keep an eye out on the Grand Rapids and maybe Muskegon Craigslists. I see chickens on there all the time. Good luck!

I have a RIR hen that chases my Cornish X chicks (5wks), plucks the feathers from them and then eats the feathers. Is that weird or what! I always know it's happening because I can hear the chicks squawking and running away. They stay in a stall in the barn and the hen jumps in there to bully...

They will eat almost everything in your garden. Fence them or the garden, whichever is least expensive. We're fencing the birds this year because we are planting two large gardens and it will be easier to confine the birds.
I had 27 tomato plants last year and got a whopping 7 quarts and 11...
I didn't keep real good records last year but I figured roughly each bird cost me about $7.00. I butchered them myself. They free ranged so they didn't eat as much bagged food as some might. They weighed between 4-7 lbs each last year. I butchered in groups two weeks apart.
This year my DH...
Hi Josh, I just started raising meat birds for myself last summer. I put 26 birds in the freezer last year and I have 26 meat chicks in my barn right now. I can't say I saved any money doing it this way, but like you said, I know how they were raised and what they ate.
The taste is much...
I have a young BO roo that needs a new home. He's approx 8 mos old. Is gentle with people. You can pick him up and pet him. He's good with the hens too. He's the number two rooster here so he gets pushed around a lot, even by the hens.
I only want one roo so this nice fella can be yours...
I get mine from the farm store here and they buy them from Townline Hatchery. I raised 26 broilers last year and they all made it to butchering age. Had one crippled one. I just bought 25 more. The chicks are healthy, alert and active. Here's the link. Their price for 100 is really good...
I have four young roosters too many. I would gladly trade them all for a young BO hen or broody hen of any large breed. Three of them are Araucana/Americana X (I guess ) the other is RIR/Araucana mix. They are easy to get along with and quite handsome if I do say so myself.

Why, thank you Four Acre Bliss! I think they're pretty too. The pictures don't show how beautiful they really are.
I hope I can sell them, because I don't really want to butcher them.
Hey! maybe I could trade them for a hen. Ya think?
Laskaland: They aren't real scrawny, but they...
