I have had this same question myself, and I have seen pics of black sex link hens with some massive combs and wattles. I have two pullets that have more regular size combs and wattles, but then there is Big Mama. Big Mama crows sometimes, but we had a roo that was rehomed so maybe she just has...
One of my black sex links was 16 weeks. The other two told her to keep up the good work, but that they weren't ready yet. They're 20 weeks and nothing!
She looked more like the black sex link chicks than Australorp when I got her. She had very little white on her. I have two other that I assume are black sex links also, and neither one of them has comba and wattles that big, but they are growing. I just figured that not every breed of chicken...
The chicken in question has no spurs whatsoever, and does the squat when I pet her. I don't know if that means anything or not.
So you think she(?) is trying to crow to replace the missing roo?
Like I said I am completely new to this, but I don't know what would be more likely--her to be a hen...
What breeds does that occur in? Does this chicken look like one of those kinds?
I looked at the feathersite and some of the sex link hens do have huge wattles and combs.
She/he has the brown mostly on her/his chest. There is lacing (I don't know if I'm explaining that correctly) on the feathers on around her/his back. Here is an extreme closeup. I am just a newbie but I don't see any signs of rooster butt on her.
Ok sorry I'm just freaking out. And it was a sickly sounding crow, but you could tell that she was doing the body movement they do when they crow, but not nearly as exaggerated.
All right. We just heard "her" try to crow. We did rehome our roo last week, so maybe that has something to do with it? She doesn't seem to have any other roo behaviors, but who knows...I am so new to this. What the heck would "she" be if "she's" a roo?
Thanks for all your help!
I have a 14 week old speckled sussex roo that we do not want. He is a very sweet bird, we just do not have any plans for a rooster. He does have a crooked toe on the outside of each foot.
OK here's a side pic. And I just want to say that a black sex link is just a guess on my part. The chick came from Privett Hatchery by way of TSC. If she's a he, then what would he be?
OK ya'll I've asked about this chickie before, but I've got a really good pic now. She is a 15 week old Black Sex Link (I think). My MIL insists she is a roo, which would make her something other than a black sex link obviously. There has been no crow from her (we do have another roo) but there...
Where are you? I live in NE Alabama. I have a 14 week old roo that was unexpected. I would also be willing to give up one of my pullets, if you could give them a good home. He is a very nice roo so far, but he does have crooked toes on the outside of each foot. I'll send pics if you're interested.
Ok so she is just really advanced for her age? I felt pretty sure that they are black sex link which would make her a girl. I was just kinda worried about it, since one of our speckled sussex has turned into Big Boy, as seen here:
I have been calling this 10 week chickie big mama, but I am getting worried about her wattles and comb. In the second pic there is the other chickie I have that I think is a black sex link also that doesn't have nearly the size of comb or wattles of big mama.
Thanks!
They were in the pullet bin, so hopefully all are pullets! Can you tell me about the sussex? These seem to be pretty shy, but they have gotten braver in the past couple of days.
