it just seems extreme. We've had chickens for about 6 years now - we have observed changing pecking orders as chickens come and go, but this notion that she can't share the roost or lay her eggs with the others is something we've never seen. And she seems to be getting healthier by the day which...
So we are worried that our favorite chicken Dixie doesn't roost with the others, nor lay her eggs in the nest boxes .
We have 4 hens. Trixie and Dixie preceeded the other 2 in order of arrival to our flock. All the girls roosted together after becoming acquainted. They all lay eggs in the...
Thanks everybody. Sadly there are no local farms in this NYC suburb. Since the Agway is quite a distance, we do get large quantities, but have found mold problems due to our storage challenges. We get our food there too! Guess we trek up there for straw.
Out local Agway recommended Hearty Hen - so we're going to give that a go. When your hens refused to eat, did they finally start given no other options?
Thanks for that info! I don't think they are eating much of their layer feed, but they scarfed down the sunflower seeds. I understand I need to feed the high protein and cut out the fat for a while so I may see how they do with scrambled eggs or meal worms. Can have an example of an "all flock"...
Our girls haven't laid an egg in well over a month and there have been feathers everywhere. We've had chickens for several years and have never seen such a protracted molt. Their combs are pale and they don't seem to want to eat much (except sunflower seeds but we know their layer feed is better...
OK... The egg accident happened yesterday. I rinsed an egg this morning and ate it. I threw away one of the eggs that was shiny with dried egg white. A new fresh egg lightly touched the egg with the dried egg white. I don't want to be too neurotic about all this... I guess my main question is...
My husband was carrying 5 eggs - tripped and and 2 broke and the raw egg got all over the remaining 3 eggs. I was hesitant to wash them. (I'm trying to find the thread on washing eggs and am not having luck.) This morning I rinsed one and ate it. I am concerned since raw egg is organic matter it...
My 3-4 year old hen is shaking her head and I think sneezing. Is this something that she can get over? (like a cold?) Should I separate her from the other hens?
Such great info on this website!
Our "little girls" are 14 weeks old and have been living in a dog crate within the chicken run since they were 6 weeks old. We started letting them out and into the run - and when we can, out of the run - a few weeks ago to mix with the 2 "big girls." When we...
Thank you ALL for this info!!
YIKES!! I just found out the our pullets are NOT 12-15 weeks old as I expected when I ordered them, but 6 weeks old! Does the fact that they are much younger than what I originally posted make much difference in your advice? The young'uns seem pretty self...
Thanks so much for your reply! We do let the girls out every now and then and watch them closely as we have a number of critters around here including muskrats, hawks, deer, coyotes. I was told that they need to know where "home" is before we let them out - maybe a week in the crate in the run...
We have two adult hens - one is no longer laying. That one, Violet came to us last spring with a hen companion who ended up dying mid winter. We found a young adult (Tilly) to be her companion. Violet let Tilly know in no uncertain terms that she was alpha. But she didn't draw blood. Now the two...
So funny!! I was just thinking about what I was going to do this winter and what we went through to train them to use the nipples and wondering how they would re-acclimate! That's reassuring!
yesssss the girls are using the nipple waterer!! Lipschicks, we did what you told us to do - let them get thirsty, then my husband captured Violet and I grabbed her little head and stuck her beak up the the nipple and I could almost see her lightbulb moment!! This is going to make our live SO...
OK! We're installing it in the coop now! I ordered a red laser pen which should arrive at Staples today. Somebody posted about using that to attract them to the nipples. I'll give that method a try and report back!!
