My pupae are dying.
Here's some background... I've had these mealies for about a year now. They were purchased, as wormies, at a petstore that kept them in a fridge. They did the 1st pupae thing fine, beetles (some are still alive), babies. The babies are the current worms. These current worms...
I use what I guess is called crumbles, it's not pellets. Will this not work? The hens always have some finer stuff left over that I have to mix with something else and refeed, which is fine but...
Ty! I think I'll not add moisture but try to get the temp more stable. Maybe they are getting too cold as we don't run the space heater unless someone is home/awake. Burning down the house won't do the wormies any good. :)
I'm also going to try to increase my numbers by buying more - at this...
Yes, normal. It's one that has just shed.
Humidity... I've had my wormies for about 9 mo. and have yet to see a 2nd generation. Many of my 2nd gen pupua just end up white and dried up... I've noticed faster worm growth when I put a space heater near them {my house is in the low 60's usually}...
As for greenhouses and chickens... have you seen Joel Salatin's Polyface Farm? He's got a nice setup with a hoop house that he winters the chickens in. Basically turns it to compost on the floor during the winter {deep bedding method?}, and they chickens get it ready for planting while they are...
I wrote a few pages back that I didn't have wormies yet - but I do! They are tiny but they are there. For some reason they are growing quite slowly but they are there and I've seen a few skins so some are getting bigger. At this rate tho' it might be winter 2014 before I can feed them to my hens...

I hope mine start turning back to worms before winter. I bought worms earlier this summer {I should have made a note of the date} and they have all turned to beetles... but are seemingly happy being beetles and I've seen no new worms. They seem to like where they are. It's been *months*...
I don't have my coop built yet but bunker will be a good description. :) Before I even put anything in it I'm going to bait it, and put infrared cams on it and see if anything can get through. If they do I'll fix it, then bait again until it's solid. We have a large pond 20 paces from the front...
I'm stuck on this thread and don't even have my hens yet lol. I'm trying to learn what I can now so if something crops up I can, hopefully, be on top of it. While we are waiting to hear how the hen is... what causes this? I plan to free-range {safely} my hens, we won't really have grass per...
Hi Everyone! I've finally taken the plunge and joined. :) I've been lurking around the BYC world for a few years - learning all I can while I talk my dh into keeping chickens of our very own. We get pastured eggs for $2/doz. so he figures that is easier than building a coop and all - and he's...
