Hi Everyone! I've finally taken the plunge and joined.
I've been lurking around the BYC world for a few years - learning all I can while I talk my dh into keeping chickens of our very own. We get pastured eggs for $2/doz. so he figures that is easier than building a coop and all - and he's right... but it's not near as much fun I imagine!
So this summer we are collecting pieces and parts to get the building done and hopefully get chicks by fall/spring. {Ideally fall so they can be laying in spring}
I'm also going to get a meal worm farm started soon!
Thanks for all the info I've found here - it's more than a wealth of info and I hope to be a regular participant on the forums in the near future.
I'm quite crunchy and my girls will be spoiled just like our 3 dogs and the cat. No soy/corn... etc.
We live on 20 acres, with a large pond in the front yard, but the land is heavily wooded - I'm going to take several weeks for testing the predator proof-ness of my coop/run before ever putting the hens inside. We have all sorts of critters that would love to have a chicken dinner.
I think that's about it for me.
Thanks again for all the info. I used to do raptor rehab in Northern Cali in the 80s and I was just telling my mom I don't know how we did it w/o the internet. lol.
