    Opinions on Automatic Coop Doors?

I bought my automatic ADOR door in 2014 and absolutely would buy another if it failed now. I did have a few problems with the electronics when it first arrived due to the high humidity and rain here in east Hawaii, but Rod was great and sent a replacement with additional sealant applied, and at...

    When will I get eggs?

I expect the first eggs at about 6 months from Barred Rocks and Gold Sex Links. We got in 13 of each that were hatched August 21. We were surprised by the first egg from one yesterday, January 5, and another today. So that is a mere 4-1/2 months. Small but very tasty.

    Swollen, crusty cheeks

I wanted to follow up on this. We ended up with two of the chicks becoming so crusty and swollen that their eyes were closed to tiny slits, and maybe three others showed milder signs. Within ten days all had fully recovered, seemingly with no ill effects. With 33 total chicks and hens I expected...

    Scalped Cockeral

I have been amazed several times by the ability of chickens to recover from what looked to be major injuries. We had a hen similarly scalped by an aggressive rooster (who was re-homed immediately after the assault). My initial thought was that the injury was not survivable, but with a few days...

    Swollen, crusty cheeks

Thank you. We have not noticed this one being a particular target of pecking. She is eating and drinking, and joins the rest of the flock in foraging. The flock is free range during the day. The fowl pox article photos do not really look like what we see on her, none of the other chickens show...

    Swollen, crusty cheeks

A few days ago we noticed apparent injuries to a 3 month old barred rock pullet just behind her eyes. When first noticed, I thought it looked like pecking injuries. Since then, there has been swelling to the area, at one point her eyes were completely swollen shut. The feathers in the area are...

Anyone ever use a chicken leash?

Ours know that the call of 'here chick chick chick' means they are going to get treats and they come running and do not hesitate going inside their closeable yard which is where we have taught them the treats will be delivered. Before we turned them loose free range we gave them treats in their...

When integrating chicks, does it make any difference if breeds same or different?

Thank you, both, for your comments. You have pretty much confirmed what I expected. And, yes, with a couple of exceptions the survivors are producing eggs, and have been doing so for about 10 weeks. Always some drama, comedy, adventure, tragedy, or excitement with chickens.

When integrating chicks, does it make any difference if breeds same or different?

Half my flock was killed by a pack of dogs this week so I need to get in some new chicks much sooner than anticipated. The flock is 8 month old pullets, a mix of barred rocks and gold sex links. The current breed mix has been fine together and neither breed has stood out as better than the...

Has anyone used robe to keep chickens from flying over fence?

While the girls were still too young to be out on their own, but old enough to fly over the 6' fence of their yard, I strung some 3/16" nylon rope across the top of my chicken yard and then tied lengths of flag tape from the rope. That seemed to give them the illusion of a much more solid...

When do Barred Rocks begin laying?

My barred rocks started laying at ages ranging between 23 and 27 weeks.

Can this randy rooster be rehabilitated?

We do not plan to hatch eggs, but would not mind if that happens. But if he stays there will be no way to keep him physically separated from the girls because of our primary objective of having the flock for coqui control. They need to be out foraging and finding the coquis around the trees...

Can this randy rooster be rehabilitated?

I'm a chicken novice. A bit over a year ago a rooster passing through the neighborhood decided the livin' was easy at our place and settled down. We had watched him drifting for 6 months prior to his putting down stakes as every 4 to 6 weeks he would shift his territory by about 100 yards or...

    wheels

I just built a wheeled coop using flat-free hand truck wheels that I bought at Home Depot. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Marathon-10-1-2-in-x-3-1-3-in-Flat-Free-Tire-for-Hand-Trucks-00210/202277668 These were a bit wider than wheelbarrow tires which should help when the ground is soft. They did...

WHAT KIND OF "PEOPLE" FOOD CAN CHICKENS EAT?

I've seen before that avocados are bad for them, but the rooster in my avatar eats avocado scraps from the kitchen and avocados on the ground under our tree and seems to find them a treat.
