This is Joy, a rescued battery cage hen who has stopped laying eggs due to age. Her appetite and disposition are excellent, but she is not able to bear any weight on her right leg. We think she may have been injured initially in a mad rush away from the scary humans when we first got her and her...
Thank you so much for your reply and helpful advice. I really appreciate it. I will take a flashlight out there as soon as possible. I also looked under her wing last night after some research on general health checks....and found lice eggs. So that's news to me. :) I love learning! I just want...
This girl is an old ex-batt rescue hen. We have a couple dozen of them. Some have a few scabs on their combs, and some are missing a bunch of feathers, but this one is different. She has a really sad looking comb with poor circulation in the tips and a lot of scabs. No pus, a tiny bit of blood...
Update: This morning when I opened up the coop and put feed outside, Toes flew right on out of her nest to eat. There weren't any eggs laid yet today, but still, I sense a renewed vigor in her and a desire to participate in non-broody behavior. A good sign. :)
You lovely people are tremendously helpful and thoughtful and encouraging! Wow!
I've decided that at this time, I would only be endangering or neglecting chicks or chickens if I let them hatch.
I have decided it's okay to take away her eggs (she is very docile and doesn't seem to mind too...
I am completely heartbroken and worried about what is the "right" thing to do. I am reaching out for your opinions - the good, the bad, the ugly, the who cares, whatever. Whatever you think. Just bear this in mind: I want what's best for the chickens, for animals, for life itself.
I am going...
Thank you so much for your advice! The coop is too small for dog crates - even one, really - so I decided to bring them back in. They'd only been out there for a few hours anyway. Neil the Rooster, normally very aggressive, was very docile and even relaxed as I carried him back inside. Same with...
About a week ago, one of our dogs found a way into the outdoor chicken run, where our entire flock was outside the coop, even though it's cold here (AB, Canada). My fault entirely. Long story short, the chickens survived but all 4 hens plus the rooster were injured, and are in dog crates in the...
Hi! I'm just dealing with a recent dog attack on all 4 of my hens plus my rooster. They are in dog crates in the house and I'm doing a lot of reading on these forums about treating their wounds. There are already lots of threads going with replies, so I suggest searching "dog bite" etc. on this...
I am dealing with a recent dog attack on my chickens, too, and there are a lot of threads on this forum already about treating dog bites. There is TONS of useful, helpful, encouraging info! I'm just learning too, but just search "dog bite" in the forums and you'll see what I mean! I highly doubt...
I have a rooster and 4 hens, all older, rescue chickens. The coop is insulated (although the new resident mice are eating through that to get to the feed!) and small.
We have a heated water dish for dogs plugged in, and although it doesn't keep the water warm, it keeps the water water.
We...
I just logged on to byc to vent and grieve a little. And came on this poll. For me, the worst predators are dogs - MY OWN DOGS - because I've only ever lost chickens to disease and old age, or to our youngest puppy, a HUGE girl who battering-rammed her way into the pen when I was going in to...
