Hey Brookliner, they're spring loaded hooks and there's one at each end on the two doors so unless the raccoons are teaming up they should be safe. You can't raise either side more than a couple inches without the other end being unlatched as well. Never seen a raccoon around though that doesn't...

Thanks all for the kind comments! bruceha2000, good point. Found over the past week (Lots of rain and t-storms) that if the rain hits hard against the windows it does leak a little on the inside. Breaking out the caulking gun to remedy that this weekend.

Oh wow, that's awesome! Makes all those hours of getting eaten by mosquitoes, cuts, and bruises worthwhile, gotta go tell the chickens how lucky they are! Thank you all for the votes!

Swollen Cheek, Eye Swelled Shut - Looking for suggestions

Hah! I appreciate the thoughts, believe me. She's only 5 months old so no molting yet. Maybe related to whatever is wrong with her, she laid her first egg the Monday before Christmas and was laying daily until Sunday when it started. I'll mix some crushed egg shell in with the treats to make...

Swollen Cheek, Eye Swelled Shut - Looking for suggestions

I do have crushed oyster shell in a hanging dispenser in the run that they're eating and they're on layer pellets so she should be OK with calcium. Her eggs were fine until that one, I found a mess under the roost where it looked like the outer shell had opened on impact but was really soft and...

Swollen Cheek, Eye Swelled Shut - Looking for suggestions

Thanks so much! If she's not showing any improvement over the next few days after the switch to Tylan soluble in the water I'll head to the feed store for Tylan 50 and syringes and try that. I hope she gets better, she's always the first one to the run door to see what treats I'm bringing and...

Swollen Cheek, Eye Swelled Shut - Looking for suggestions

So I sat her in my lap (of course one of the barred rocks had to join in) for a few minutes. Her beak is just barely open, you have to look just right to see it. No noises at all, no sneezes, raspy breathing, no mucus or bubbles. I put a drop of Vet Rx by her nostril, maybe won't help much but...

Swollen Cheek, Eye Swelled Shut - Looking for suggestions

She definitely is eating well, I walked out earlier with a plate of broccoli and wheat grass and she jumped up and tried to tear it out of my hand when I walked in the run. I'm heading out to clean the coop so I'll sit with her and see if she's breathing through her mouth or not.

Swollen Cheek, Eye Swelled Shut - Looking for suggestions

Thanks so much for all the responses! I'll switch over to the Tylan this afternoon assuming the UPS driver doesn't get stuck in the snow and delivers it. Since I've already started all of them on Duramycin and am not sure if what she has hasn't been spread would it be better in this case to just...

Swollen Cheek, Eye Swelled Shut - Looking for suggestions

Thank you for the links, with no other signs (discharge, smell, sneezing, snoring, etc.) I'm at a loss as to what's wrong. She has stopped laying after finding the double soft egg under the roost so her symptoms are: Swollen "cheek" causing her eyelid to push up over the eye No eggs (lack of...

Swollen Cheek, Eye Swelled Shut - Looking for suggestions

Thank you both for the replies! She's not exhibiting the same symptoms as the thread you posted, there's no discharge from the nostril(s) and no smell whatsoever. It's only affecting the right side of her face which is obviously swollen compared to the left side which looks normal. Until she...

Swollen Cheek, Eye Swelled Shut - Looking for suggestions

Late Saturday I noticed one of our hens had some swelling on one side of her face and her eye was partially swollen closed. On Sunday morning I started all 7 chickens on Duramycin (1 t per gallon, changed every 24 hours). Also on Sunday morning I found a double soft egg under the roost that she...

    Height under coop?

I went with 2 feet as well, seems to be working well and the chicks love the dust. There are 2 swing up doors on the back side for access when it needs to be raked out.

Sweet PDZ versus DRYSTALL? for odor

I'm also using Sweet PDZ granules in poop trays below the roosts. I put a frame of treated 1x1's with 1" hardware cloth on "L" brackes a couple inches above the trays to keep the chicks out of the trays Easy to clean, just lift the wire frame off and use a kitty litter scoop to sift out the...

    First Coop/Run Attempt Finished

Thanks all! The hardware cloth is fastened with 3/4" lathe screws (and lots of them!) I think between the coop/run, brooder, and playhouse I went through about 250+ feet of hardware cloth and 500+ lathe screws. The new drill got quite a workout and a lot of scratches on my hands. Hardware cloth...
