Hey all I ordered some nipple waterers from Amazon for my flock and going to use them for my rabbits too. Here they are:

Didn't notice before I ordered them that they are 5/16" which is hard to find...
Hey everyone thanks for this thread. It has got me interested in these amazingly beautiful ducks (common in numbers maybe but uncommonly beautiful IMO). I have been researching and there seems to be a lot of opinion/experts out there. Some say one thing some another. Very confusing. Here is...
You got that right...and they didn't have a reliable means of birth control. Can you imagine the kids of today doing the "chores" they had to do back then! Everyone on the farm had to work or nobody ate. We have a five year old that we got some kid size tools for this Christmas. He can't...
Well we aren't as cold as most of you. The low was 15F last night but we got up to 40F yesterday so I was out working in the garden yesterday. I have onions and garlic planted (I use row covers for both) and I am building the greenhouse now. Found free horse manure on Craigslist so I am going...
I think that is great but I could not do it. One my wife would just not live that way if she could help it (I am not in this by myself - HA). Also I live somewhere it gets really hot in the summer (like 100-110F hot) so I like to run the AC in the summer. I also like our pool to jump into in...
Wow you are lucky...I went out this morning to check on them (riding the 4 wheeler - 5F outside - not fun!) and their pond was frozen over! Nobody around here can remember it ever happening! The ducks were just standing there staring at it...then back at me...then at the ice. I could just...
Ha you guys are too funny. I don't think any babies would have liked hearing me the other night trying to get them into the duck house, finally succeeding, and then watching them walk out the other door! Not much baby talk going on right then!
So went out this morning (14F right now and forecast for 28F high today) and let them out into the pond. Of course they are fat and happy and ran for the pond like it was their salvation. Pond only had some light rim ice on it so I know it was warmer than the air temp. Only got down to 10F...
Okay so we went out to our pond and my wife jumped into her Kayak, the one I bought for her for Christmas in 2012, and we are proud to report that the ducks are all safe in their home. I wish someone had a camera recording the scene when I opened up the clean-up door to escort the ducks in, but...
Hey Annie,
I can honestly say that your definition most closely mirrors my own. I would love to be off grid and not be reliant on anyone for anything but for where I am in my life right now that is just not possible. I am heading in the direction where I raise most of my families fruit and...
Ok so last weekend we decided our 10 black swedes were old enough to finally go out to the pond and their permanent place of residence. I built them a duck house with a sliding front door, bedded them down for the first night and then came the big day! We let them out (or at least opened the...
Hey all, my wife and I are starting to get everything ready for next year (yes it is time already!). Anyway we do everything by the BOFF principle around here. Careful. get your mind out of there! BOFF stands for Beautiful. Organized. Frugal. Functional. So we are going to plant everything...
Actually I think what I was really asking is what YOUR definitions were and I thank you all for the replies. I like some of the ideas - like grinding my own flour - gotta try that, When I moved in here it seemed like it was very windy every day so I bought a wind meter to see if it was windy...
Hey everyone thanks for answering. I think a practical self sustainment is what we are going for as well. I like the IDEA of self sufficiency but I also want to have the pool, air conditioning, etc that I couldn't support with a 1000 or even 2000 watt system of solar panels. I know that is...
Hi all, I have to admit that I have dreamed of having a self sufficient farm since I was a young boy. Since I am now having "anniversaries" of my 38th birthday that has been a long time. I was an Army brat and then joined the Navy after college (Clemson - Go Tigers!) so it has taken me a long...
Any concerns with the ducks being able to go into the woods? I would clear the perimeter around the woods so no predators could get in "tree to tree" to get over the fence. Would I lose some ducks just letting them go in the "woods" or would it be good protection for them from hawks and stuff?
