Is scratch the same as corn for keeping the chickens warmer during winter? I see cracked corn in their layer mix and wonder if I should be giving them extra corn in the evening? The nights are starting to go below 0 Celsius (32 F) Will feeding them scratch interfere with the layer rations...
That's Peony on the left in the picture, taken the first week we got them. Her comb stayed small this whole time, (three months) until last week. Now I find it hard to tell them apart, especially when I am looking down at them while filling their feeder.
Peony finally laid her first egg this morning! 31 weeks. It was quite a bit larger than Alices's (whose been laying all along). Her comb started to grow and turn bright red a week ago so I knew it would be any day. It was quite exciting to open the nest box lid and see 2 eggs today.
It has been raining every day for what seems like weeks. It has been snowing a few days too. This is the time of year when garlic gets planted. I have been worrying that I won't be able to do it. Finally this past Wednesday (day off) I managed to get into the garden and get it all planted. My...
My enclosure is as safe as I could make it this summer. I dug a 10" trench around the bottom of the walls and attached 1/4" hardware cloth and buried it again. Plus I laid 8" paving stones around the base to keep out digging pests. I also did it once I learned on this site that chickens dig...
I have 2 hens in one of those little chicken hutches from TSC. It has a small pop hole and has to be opened and closed manually. It is starting to get cold at night here in Ontario Canada and I wonder if I should be closing the door each night once they go in.? It is located in a sheltered...
I have 2 RSL's that are 29 weeks old. One has been laying since I got them at 19 weeks. Her comb and wattle is very red and large. The other one still has a small dull comb, she seems quite happy and healthy though. Just a bit slow I hope. Every day I hope to see 2 eggs when I go out but not...
Who has heard of grumpy, hateful old hens? That's the first I've read. I have 2 delightful hens right now and hope to buy 3 wee chicks in the spring. 5 chickens should get along if there is enough room, food and water? I guess I will see next season. Cheers!
I live in Bluevale, Ontario which is 30 minutes from Lake Huron and one hour from Kitchener. I bought my 2 red sex links from Freys hatchery in St. Jacobs. I picked them up since it is only 50 minutes to drive. I was hoping to see more of the place but from what I saw, it's quite the operation...
