    November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

Wow, that's a lot! I do give mine scraps from the kitchen and garden... and they do appear to be quite happy and healthy. It's only the Brahma eggs I'm having trouble with. The others all hatch fine. At least I know what to do now with my bumper crop of cayenne peppers! I wondered if that was ok...

    November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

Well today is actually hatch day... and I'm pretty well done. So far, 20 out of 22 eggs have hatched. One was 12 hours earlier than everyone else, the last one was mid morning today. The 2 left appear to have developed to full term, but I do not see internal pips...or any movement. Both are my...

    Scary moment

I live out in the country... cats, dogs, hawks, owls, coons, possums, fox, skunks... snakes. You name it, we have it. I wish I could free range my chickens, but I'm afraid they wouldn't last long out here. One of the hawks sits on top of the bird feeder and takes passes flying at the chicken...

3 week old Light Brahma - Gender???

Sorry, I can't say for sure. I have 4 four week old Light Brahma babies hatched from my own hens and roo. The combs aren't helping me at all on this breed. 2 are bigger than the other 2. 3 have wing coloring that are different than one of the others. I'll be watching to see if anyone else...

    November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

The eggs went in lockdown last night. Out of 23, 22 looked to be ok. One quit early. This afternoon, I had some bills to pay and a checkbook to balance, so I sat down at my desk and got to work after a quick peek at the eggs, temps and humidity. Nothing happening and nothing was expected...

    November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

Yay! Lockdown begins tomorrow for hatch number 2! After culling some clears and a couple of blood rings at day 10, the 23 I have left seem to be doing great. The first hatch is just over a month old now and they are growing like weeds. We built 2 awesome A frame tractors for them so they...

    November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

How cool is that! I too, just for chuckles, pulled 4 eggs from the fridge to fill out a row. They were more than 2 weeks old and the fridge is at 40 degrees. Day 7 candle showed all 4 developing. Day 10 is tonight. Can't wait to see how they are doing! Of course, I'm not counting my chickens...

    November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

So who was it that warned me that hatching eggs is addicting? Lol! Yep! I've got another batch cookin' since my first hatch did so well. Those babies are over 3 weeks old now and so far, so good! I'm SURE this will have to be the last batch for this year. (don't laugh!) It's gotta be. The hens...

    There Finally HATCHING !!!!!

I have Light Brahmas in one pen, the other is a Lavender Roo with 2 RIR hens and a speckled hen, so the babies are crosses. The chicks are cute!

    September Hatch-A-Long!

After doing a ton of reading on egg cartons vs laying on the floor, I opted for the egg carton. I liked it. Lots more room for the chicks to move around. No significant "trash" to navigate, from already hatched eggs. Eggs don't get knocked around. I noticed the chicks had to work a bit more to...

    There Finally HATCHING !!!!!

Awesome, good luck! Ya, keep us posted. I am interested in doing some quail myself sometime. Just finished my first ever chicken hatch yesterday. I am encouraged and ready to do more!

    September Hatch-A-Long!

Wow, that's crazy. I hope not to have the same problem. It was early... tho the first chick hatched was early and is doing fine. 2 hatched on day 19, the rest on day 20. I was totally amazed that they were all done within 24 hours. I figured this would drag out for days! I still have some...

    September Hatch-A-Long!

Here are my little cuties! 24 out of 26 hatched. 2 wound up quitters. Almost all my clears and quitters were my Brahma eggs. They tend to be kinda porous. I assume that was the issue. At least I got 4 of them! I'm afraid the little guy with the leg issue may not make it. I have done the bandaid...

    September Hatch-A-Long!

Thank ya'll! So the babies sleep a lot, run around a lot, peck a lot, walk all over each other a lot and sleep a lot again? Lol! If that's the case, mine are acting normal! One of my final 3 eggs is having a time of it with that membrane. Tough stuff that is! I'm surprised the Brahma chick...

    September Hatch-A-Long!

Update! OMG what a day! First hatch was at 2:30 am... and it's just been amazing to watch all day. Out of the 26 I put in lockdown...22 have hatched already, the one I thought might be a quitter, was. Looked like somewhere between 10 and 14 days. The egg that had the air cell on the side...

    September Hatch-A-Long!

So out of 26 eggs-18 pips so far and 2 hatched! One at 2:10 am, the other at 4:30. Wow, when they start to zip, they mean business! Peep 1 is still sitting in it's egg, but it's starting to look like it's neighbor has encouraged it to start trying to move a bit. Funny the two that have...

    September Hatch-A-Long!

Lol @ "you're doing great". Ya made me laugh with that one. I just looked in on peep 1 and another one who had only pipped about 3 hours ago, has just about zipped all the way around the egg! I could not believe how fast it went! It's not out yet, but that egg is rockin. Peep 1 is just laying...
