My 1.5 year old barred rock is not laying at this time. Since fall, she has been harassed and picked on by the other three hens to the point of drawing blood. One other hen in particular seemed to do most of the damage. Honestly, the other hens just terrorized her to the point where I can't even...
My 2 year old Plymouth Rock sleeps in the nest box at night...its a new phase, I'm sure she'll eventually move on to another spot. I just try to keep it extra clean since all the hens use that box. No biggie.
Yes, it is a relief to know we're not alone. Got back from vacation late last night, all the girls were fine. This morning we found Hester2 dead in the coop, as if she had just croaked and rolled off the roost. We did notice a pile of loose poop in the corner of the coop though. We also wonder...
Thanks for the reply...she was the only chicken to molt last year too, so perhaps she's just prone to it more. I just hope she grows some feathers back before it gets really cold. My other chicken didn't molt...I guess that's normal too?
I have six hens and all seem to be laying just fine right now, but one of them is molting. Poor thing looks like holy hell. I'm told by another chicken owner that it's because the days are getting shorter and molting is due to a lack of daylight. (I live in Maine and we have about 12 hours of...
Thanks for the info. I also read on another thread that the peepers can be softened in hot water and then manipulated so they fit into the nostrils without using any pliers. Might try that first before a plier purchase. But I did get the peepers and hope to have them in a couple of days.
I think I'm gonna try some of those Pinless Peepers, they look fairly humane and may help during this time of year as the chickens are cooped up. I don't really want to use them as a long term solution, but they may help for now. And if my other RIR is getting picked on too, well, I just dont...
I think my chickens are bored silly. We let them out as much as our schedules allow, but now I notice that my other RIR is looking pretty rumpled and losing feathers. I'll take a closer look at her tomorrow, but I suspect she's also getting picked on by the higher chicken in the order.
Spring...
Our dog got along with our four hens peacefully, but then one day just *snapped* and killed one of our hens. We were devastated. Now, when the chickens are free-ranging, the dog stays inside. If the dog needs to be out for a while, we put the hens up in the coop. They all take turns so to speak...
We originally bought 4 pullets, 2 RIRs and 2 Plymouth Rocks. And then there were three......the dog snapped one day and decided she'd get one of the PRs, and she did. Poor Hester. And now when the dog is out with the chickens, she wears a muzzle.
But I will take your advisement. I'll either get...
cmom...I looked at your BYC page...looks like you have a beautiful place.
Can you please explain more to me about the Pinless Peepers? I don't quite understand how they work.
Thanks.
Thanks Biddieacres...I'm glad to know it's not just my hens, though I don't wish this on any hen. I'm optimistic about spring, even though we just got another 16 inches of snow last night...but I believe we are in the winter homestretch. Too bad for my hens that the bare patches of ground they...
Thanks again Ridgerunner....you make several good points. We're lucky that we have the space and supplies to keep them separated. It's a tad inconvenient but we're managing. They free-ranged again today with no problems (no blood), but we didn't let them stay together in the coop.
I'm gonna...
It's winter in Maine and I feel pretty cooped up myself, so I know how the hens feel.
Biddieacres.....does your picked-on hen have her own coop now? How have you handled the situation?
When the weather gets a little warmer, I think I may try to do as Coopchick said...maybe try a mini...
Thanks Ridgerunner. Believe it or not, her last isolation was for a few weeks and her comb had healed nicely. I guess she is just clearly at the bottom of the pecking order. This all started around Christmas. She was truly sick with some sort of bacterial infection so the vet put her on Baytril...
Two of our hens are picking on the third hen. We've separated her, and every time we try to re-introduce her, she gets picked on. She becomes a bloody mess, mainly her comb. So we are constantly having to isolate her. Will all three ever be able to live together again? When they are...
