What's up with this weird-looking egg?

When my girls first started laying I had a couple like that and they have dishes of free choice oyster shells.

My BR laid 2 likes that in Jan after having laid for just 2 weeks. She hasn't laid another egg since then, and it's been over a month.

We're waiting... waiting... waiting.

I have a NH Red laying poor quality shells too. LOL... thought your pic was one of her eggs. Mine isn't a new layer. She's 18 mo old. Our layers have everything - oyster shell, grit, top quality laying pellets, free range pasture.

Some hens just make a poor quality egg no matter what....it's their body, their genetics. I've isolated the NH Red to be certain it's her. She did lay one egg with a thicker shell, but it was rough like sandpaper. She'll be butchered with some young cockerels in the next week or so.

I guess that's an option for me too, since I've got an egg eater in the bunch and I think it's the same one who laid the weird egg. But, if it's just a one time thing or just happens occasionally, I'm ok with it.

What's Mt. Airy like?

I've caught my 'thin shelled layer' eating her eggs too. But I think it's because they break so easily - then there they are....free meal. I don't think she''d bother them if they weren't so easily broken.

For a long time we would get an egg with that sandpaper-like shell, maybe once or twice per week. Over the Winter that stopped. Now I realize it was always that same hen...she just started to lay again since Spring is coming. Major free loader.

Mt Airy? It's Andy Griffith's homeplace (you know...from the Andy Griffith Show...Sheriff Taylor, Barney Fife, Opie, Aunt Bea, etc.) Fabulous for having small town atmosphere. Our Main St is the best small downtown area I've ever seen....really nice locally owned stores. But you also get the convenience of a metropolitan area and major shopping only a 45 min drive away. Great gardening too...the growing season is about 7 months from last frost to 1st frost.

Thanks for asking
