Hi! She is a Rhode Island red and is smaller than the others too and has always been, maybe a runt? Her droppings which I looked at today, are small and rough in texture-like there are pieces of grass in them. My girls free range daily as well. I looked thru her poop and did not see any worms or...

Comment by 'cls82' in article 'The Pecking Order- Understanding and Encouraging It'

I have one that seems like a bully…..they others will just be laying in the sun or having a dirt bath and she runs up to them and starts pecking them in the head, hard. Should i punish her by isolation? If I remove her will it continue to happen every time I add her back in?

    Hawks :(

Sorry about your Silkie Cheeseball. I know how it feels to loose one to a hawk. :( And yes, crows are great to keep around, but the crows just annoy the hawk, the hawk will still attack your chickens when given the chance no matter how many crows are around. I have sometimes 50 plus crows...

Tell How Predators Got Your Chickens. Save Somebody Else From The Bad Experience

For anyone who says that possums are just a nuances, they are scavengers, just go after the eggs, etc you are wrong. We had a possum break into our coop and attack 2 of our 6 chickens. One is fine, the other, a silkie, is probably going to die. We scared him off (we live in a residential area)...

My blasted chickens ate Golden Marlin fly bait

Tala- did all your birds survive? I am thinking about using it to kill a opossum, leaving it out just at night.

Poisoning Opossums with Fly bait and Coke

Ok....so I have lost almost both of my silkies to predators within 6 weeks. My first one was attacked by a hawk and had it's head ripped off, and last night, we came home from dinner and a movie to find a opossum inside the coop attacking my girls, one of my Americanas just got some feathers...

    Runny nose, fishy smell?

Oh darn.....thank you for looking though. I appreciate it. It seems that they either have a respitory infection or coryza (because of the stinky face) but from what I have read you should treat respitory infections with duramycin and the coryza with sulfa. Wondering if I can give them both just...

    Runny nose, fishy smell?

Hi! I have an original flock of 4 month olds and recently added 2 americanas that are supposed to be around a year (my bf choice, not mine-he wanted eggs asap, I wanted to raise them) and have had them for about a month now. I have noticed that one of the new americanas always has a runny nose...

Ibejaran- Ahhh, I like your pics too! I totally agree with your last statement- it's the special ones that make it worth it. I never thought I'd love a chicken, ha! But when you get a special one, how can you not?
