So right now the broody is in her 'broody' area in our garage...what do you suggest...when they are couple days old, take them over to the chicken fenced area?
In order for the Guinea to 'stay home' meaning come back at night, I'd hold them in their new coop for at least to months before letting them free range...but that is going to be hard to do since they are adults.
I have the same type of question though at a different stage of the chicks life.
Once the eggs hatch under the broody...do I really need to keep them and the mama separate from the rest of the flock for weeks?
I thought one of the reasons a mama hen was better than an incubator was because she...
We have her all set up in her own area and so far so good. We candled the eggs for the first time tonight and only one hadn't 'taken' the rest looked to be developing normally.
I'd like to not have her in that area after the chicks are born...how are they best integrated?
Do we move her the...
I would highly recommend good quality food! I keep seeing 50lb for $8...what is in that stuff to be so cheap? We buy Non-Soy, Non-GMO, Non-Medicated Feed for I think $24 for a 50lb bag. BUT I get $5 a dozen for those eggs because they are a good quality. 50% increase in vitamin content over...
I am in North TX too, which Lowe's that is Awesome to find HC 75% off!
We live just east of Dallas and I would recommend getting them. Depending on your lot size...6-12 is good and Orpington's are sweet, sweet!
we built a coop and used HC for the windows...on the few nights a year it gets below...
We have our first Hen that has gone broody and she is sitting on fake eggs right now until the fertilized ones arrive from our friend on Saturday.
Nature is fascinating as she sits there almost trance like with those eggs. I know its natural but I am a little worried about her. I have heard...
We got some in the laying box!! It larger eggs, so its the hens who started to lay first...the tiny new eggs are still on the floor. So patience is the key, and I think now that the first layers are laying in the box I am really hopeful the others will follow.
I love having Chickens!
We went out last night and kicked them all out of the laying boxes...but still found an egg on the floor this morning. Patience as you say is probably the key to this dilemma.
We are having this problem as well. Our hens have been laying for a couple weeks now, and not one egg in the laying boxes...all have been on the floor of the coop, and even a couple in the run. We changed their laying box form 3 smaller boxes to 2 larger ones about 13x13 or so and have had...
We are raising a dozen chickens and a dozen keets both born on or about Augst 1st...so they are ~4.5 weeks old now.
In a few weeks we plan to let the Guinea's free range and hope they come home at night. But we dont' plan to (at this time anyway) let the chickens free range.
Does anyone have a...
HI all, new to the forum ... prompted by my need to identify a chick. Looks just like yours chickenpoostew ! I'll take a pic tomorrow, 'she' is about 4.5 weeks old and was suppose to be a buff orpington, but it's feathering out more white the golden/buff is going away and the legs were blue...
