Well after reading your link and looking at a few other resources, I double checked the coop. The oyster shell feeder was empty.:(
I filled it back up and will be keeping g a close eye on the other girls in case I need to do some liquid calcium. I must have just skipped over it in my chore...
Thanks for the replies. My girls have oyster shell free choice and get their shells back too. She didn't feel egg bound from the outside but I didn't do a cloacal exam since everything seemed in order back there.
Poor thing. So we're going with internal issue? Do you think her wry tail could...
This morning Lumpy was acting normal. About1:30 pm she was laying on the coop floor. She got up when I came in, but I scooped her up anyways. I could tell something was off. She wasn't fluffed up but seemed tired. I checked her vent and it was normal. Felt her abdomen and it was normal. Checked...
It didn't work! LOL!
They used the nesting boxes as a step to jump to the highest roost to join her! I have a few older girls a bit miffed that their spot is occupied!
Thanks everyone. It was the right choice. While it was very hard, after a couple days I feel much better about my decision. I appreciate everyone's kind words.
I have a 5 week old severely hooked beak baby. I have trimmed weekly and filed it. I have pavers and rocks out for her to file on her own too. I have tried hand feeding and syringe feeding. But the deformity is just too great and she is starving. Her eyes are closing and her wings are drooping...
Wanted to update. Lexi and baby are doing great. I had picked up two BR babies hatched by a friend in case the lone chick would be raised by me. When I saw that mom was doing better I slipped the two BRs under her and she immediately accepted them! So the little family is out with the flock as...
Only one of Lexi's two eggs have hatched. I have a friend that just hatched some BR so I slipped a couple of those under her. Hopefully the introduction continues to go well.
Have mama and baby in a cat carrier. I candled the last egg and saw no movement but put that under her anyways just in case. Still hoping it all works out.
Thanks! I've got a backup brooder prepped. Hope the other one hatches ok so that if mom leaves they will have each other. I have another hen with 5 10 day olds. Any chance she would step in?
I gave the chick a few drops of poly-vi-sol and saw mama back on the nest. I slipped the chick back under her and am going to the feed store for another heat lamp. I will monitor closely and decide what to do tonight. I might just bring mama and baby and egg inside tonight in a cat carrier until...
My broody's hatch day is tomorrow but one of her two eggs hatched this morning. I came home just now and saw mom out in the run with the other hens. I checked the coop and found this little one under the nesting boxes buried in straw. I grabbed her and snuggled her to warm her up.
I notice now...
Since Lexi has crushed 4 eggs total during her broody period I occasionally lift her to make sure there is no gore. She always let's me and gets some pets for a reward. Today I went to peek and she tried to take my hand off. That's when I saw the little face poke out from her wing!!! Looks like...
Lexi the broody will never get eggs again. Set #2 and more crushed eggs. This time it's day 18!!! Poor things were almost there. She has 2 eggs left. Let's see if she can keep them in one piece until hatch. Hopefully she'll do a better job with the actual chicks!
