June Hatch-A-Long

Only one of Lexi's two eggs have hatched. I have a friend that just hatched some BR so I slipped a couple of those under her. Hopefully the introduction continues to go well.

Our babies are here! A couple of days early...4 out of 5 so far.
Here are pictures of two and Mama - too cute to be legal!

So many cute babies! I have one batch that will be 5 weeks tomorrow, and the latest ones will be a week old tomorrow. I need to stop hatching for a bit, we're running out of coop space.

That's a nice problem to have, eh?
Our 5th one didn't make it but this was our first time ever hatching chicks - we are thrilled and amazed at the whole miraculous experience!

When do you let them roam with the big girls?
And when do they stop eating chick feed?
Thanks for any info you can offer...

I'm the same way. I have one more batch that are ready to go into lock down come Thurs. Then, the bators are done for a while..and me. Whew. I have plenty of babies to watch that can be good layers by winter.

The first 6 weeks they get starter, then on to grower until they are laying age. We feed organic, no soy feed. They won't go out with the big girls until they are close to the same size.

I'm putting my incubator away for awhile. I think.

Got home from a fun day at the lake with my girls to find an early chick unzipped! Didn't take too long to get out of its shell (perfect first hatchling for two anxious little girls to experience!). Looks healthy as far as I can tell and is chirping like crazy and making its way all around the incubator.

*Oh, and since I didn't get any responses about my water leaking question, I ended up just filling a short, wide-mouth mason jar with water, covering with a cheesecloth (to make sure no hatched chicks could fall in) and popped it in as quickly as possible so the lid was only open for 2 seconds. Seems to have done okay, although it's definitely not as steamy in there as it was when I first filled the built in water reservoirs.

Cute photos..they look like they are having fun watching!

You don't want steam on the windows, too much humidity. Leaky question..guess I didn't see it. Are you talking about the holes that are in the bottom of the bator? You only need to fill the wells, if the humidity isn't up enough, the I use sponges, or a new cloth/towel..just a hand towel that's been cut in half. That mason jar sounds like a good idea when you have the room for it..and good that you have the cloth over it. Remember also, when you put the water dish down for them, to put marbles or stones in there so they can't drown. I know to do this! So what didn't I do once this year? Yep, forgot. How could I? And yes, I lost a chick. I was soo mad at myself! Still am when I remember going in and finding that baby like that.
Good luck on the rest of the hatch! You are going to have nose prints on the windows. he he..

Yeah, I think it was just missed between the other posts of cute chickie pictures! I did fill only the reservoirs, but the water seemed to have leaked out later that night. I couldn't see what if anything was left in there, I just know that I cleaned up a LOT of water from under the incubator that night. My only concern with the mason jar was that it isn't as much surface area as the reservoirs, but it looks like it's humid enough in there (the first chick did okay anyway!)
