June Hatch-A-Long

So, here's a question... Hatch day is supposed to be tomorrow, how long can this chick stay in the incubator waiting for the other eggs? I did not put a water dish for drinking in there.

I think I am giving up trying to hatch eggs. I had 12 Quail eggs and 16 Lavender Orp eggs in the incubator or rather hatcher. I had one quail hatch and it has horridly misshapen legs and feet. The chicks should have hatched yesterday but nothing. I do have 63 more quail eggs due to go on lockdown tomorrow and due to hatch Monday. We will see if anything comes from that.

Sounds like temp issues during incubation. The incubator needs to be maintaining a steady 99.5° to 101.5°F temp BEFORE you even think about adding eggs. Get that straightened out first, and you should have little problems with hatching. I've lost entire batches due to temp glitches, in fact, I just had one a couple months ago where the thermostat got bumped and the temp spiked to well over 104°F for who knows how long. But that doesn't mean I should give up. If I did, then I wouldn't have all my baby quail, silkies and...as of the past hour...8 turkey poults (there are more pipping in the incubator right now) that I've successfully hatched out since then. When the temp and humidity are steady and normal, my hatches are usually at least 80%, and often times at 100%, and I don't have any with deformities.

Keeping my fingers crossed that you have a good hatch with your quail...

I just take mine out real quick. The hatched chick raised the humidity..should be fine. I never have problems taking them out as they hatch. Just watched my broody with eggs. She had pipped eggs, was hot out there, so she was standing a bit to cool off. Guess mama hens haven't been told about lock down. Anyway, if you are not wanting to take them out right away, it's suggested no longer than 24 hrs. of them being left in.

My 6yo is REALLY anxious to take Chickie out of the incubator, but I had hoped she'd have a friend to come out with by morning so she wasn't all alone in the brooder... no such luck. One other egg did break a little hole through the shell/membrane this morning, but hasn't really started to zip around yet (poking a hole through the shell is an 'external pip', right?). We missed this step with the first one, it can really take a while to unzip, right?

Mine took 6 hrs from external pip to start of zip, if I remember it can be up to 24 hours
