June Hatch-A-Long

I had one hatch tonight, took it out and put it under mama. She was growling at me at first. Just went back to make sure she was fine with it..I heard..cluck cluck cluck..instead of growling. :)

My school has finally closed for the June holidays!!!! YAY!!!!
Anyway I have a hen who is on day 18!! Cant wait for the eggs to hatch! She has 13 eggs and when I candled yesterday they were all alive and I could see them moving! So far so good!

Yay Chicky! That's a lot of eggs! She must be a big girl. My broody is a leghorn! Of all things. Never expected a leghorn to go broody, but am taking advantage of it..I had some hatch from the bator, took a few out to her, and brought in a couple of her eggs..I had only put three under her. She didn't know the difference in the middle of the night. This morning, went out, and what did I see..? A cute little black head peeking out from her white chest..wish I had brought my camera. Will keep it with me today. I am going to try and sneak a few more under if I get more to hatch today. Pretty cute.

My turkey eggs are pipping!!!!!!!

All four Narragansett turkey eggs in the cooler-incubator I made, and two so far (that I could see from the window anyway) in Hova-bator...it's an old round Styrofoam 1980's model that has seen better days, but it still keeps temp, so that's all that matters.

The fifth little egg in the cooler-incubator is from a Polish. I was out at my aunts and while we were outside, one of her Polish hens laid an egg in a box outside the coop. It was still warm when she handed it to me and told me to take it home and eat it. Instead I took it home and put it in with the turkey eggs a couple of days later so that it would be due to hatch at the same time. I candled it a couple of days ago and it looked to be right on schedule.

Well day 20 in the incubator and when I got up this morning I have 5 new EE chicks, That makes 25 for the month so far so I think I am going to see if the new momma pullet who hatched out 7 last weekend will take them .....

Will keep you updated on feature events and happenings ........

Yes. She is a bit bigger than a normal sized hen. I can hear cheeping now in her eggs. Sadly I am going to visit my granny this weekend so when I get back all the eggs will hopefully have hatched. Can't wait to get back even though I haven't left yet. Hahahahahaha

I'm a little worried about humidity in my incubator... we're borrowing it from a friend so I'm not sure what kind it is - looks like a typical square Styrofoam one. Anyway, after I filled the central water reservoirs for lockdown yesterday I noticed water underneath the incubator. There must be a small hole or something because I ended up cleaning up a lot of water last night and I'm worried that it's gone dry again. It had been nicely steamed up in there but the windows on top are dry again (I can't actually see the water reservoirs to know if they are all empty, of if I just lost the water from one, etc.).

I think I could probably get some more water in there without taking off the lid using a funnel w tubing through the vent hole on top, but if there is really a hole it will just leak back out again. I'd really have to disrupt the eggs in order to get a wet washcloth or something under the wire tray holding the eggs.

What would YOU do? This is our first time hatching so I'm looking to the experienced hatchers ;)

I left home to go get a root canal and came home to one chick out of the shell and another trying to get out. I was SHOCKED! This morning when I left there was NO signal that they would be hatching soon. There were no internal or external pips.. No rocking of the shell. Nothing!

Then..
THESE TWO!

The first one out was from the one egg that I marked as a "K" instead of an "X" for my 3 year old. So the K one (dark) was out first so she named her Dorothy (from the Wizard of Oz). She is obsessed! No sign from the other eggs.. but now I know that means NOTHING! ;)

Since Lexi has crushed 4 eggs total during her broody period I occasionally lift her to make sure there is no gore. She always let's me and gets some pets for a reward. Today I went to peek and she tried to take my hand off. That's when I saw the little face poke out from her wing!!! Looks like she has at least one baby hatched! Keeping fingers crossed that her second egg hatches for her also. Love the hatch days!
