June Hatch-A-Long

My first time australorp broody (and my own first hatch ever) has babies as of today! I went out this morning to find one buff chipmunk baby and it seems there's a new one every half hour!!! It's better than Christmas! I'll post pics later! I feel bad for mama hen, since it seems I'm hovering constantly. She's been a good sport!

I have quail eggs which should have hatched Sunday and Lavender Orrps due tomorrow in the hatcher. None of the quail eggs hatched and I had really given up on them but I just checked and one of the quail eggs is rolling all over! The quail are the first dozen eggs my quail girl laid and I was not even sure they would be fertile so even one chick out of those will be a bonus.

So I candled and only saw movement in one egg, I pipped them externally and 6/7 left were dead, two early quitters with shells to dark to see, one quit at the feather stage, one quit after lockdown, full grown, but hadn't absorbed the yolk, and 2 died after absorbing most of they old sack without internally pipping, one was for sure severely malpositioned, one was harder to tell, as it came out in the sack. The one still alive I've started assisted hatch, she wasn't cheering anymore, and when I opened the air cell the inner membrane was dry, I've taken off the entire air cell area to allow for me to place wet paper towel on the inner membrane, she is now chirping, and I'm waiting for the blood vessels to recede.

Here's momma with four of her babies, just hatched today! There's a fifth little black one (looks australorp-ish) that is hiding under her fluffy butt! There's six more to go, and from what I can see from a brief glimpse, there's a few pips in some of the others! I'm interested I'm seeing how the chocolatey colored one turns out! They're a mixed bunch, but I think dad has some lemon/dun/dilute type coloring (I am the furthest thing from expert though), so it should be interesting! The silvery grey one I'm thinking may be a bast...rd of Frank, the Silver Penciled Rock. Leroy, the Easter egger is likely the daddy to most, but Frank gets some when he can, despite his banished status (he spends most the day outside the coop, poor feller)

Here's some cuteness I couldn't resist sharing. There's my woods broody with her 15 and the 6 I hatched today that I gave to her since I'm running out of brooders and was feeling too lazy to start the grand chick shuffle today

And a really huge moth that has nothing to do with anything...

10 out of 11 made it! The 11th one had several abnormalies including with his yolk sack, malpositioned and a thick membrane and died trying to get out of the membrane (most of the shell was crumbled away except for on the wide end, leaving an eery looking membrane where there had been shell. All in all, bad though for a first time hatch!

It's hatch day!

So, last night I was in deep despair, absolutely sure nothing would hatch today because I messed up soo sooo bad. And today, I have one black orpington out of the shell, and one egg pipped!!!! I am now a gushing new mommy!

I accidentally put them in lock down 2 days early because I mixed up the days, AND I had put three rinsed out clean new Scotch bright sponges in the incubator. A day later we could smell the crazy stink of chemicals from those sponges, so we quickly removed them and replaced them with a tiny cup of water. I hope nobody climbs in like last time (she lived).

Between the sponges and early lock down I thought I was done, then to my surprise a chick hatched!!! I hope the other one makes it out and maybe some more actually pip!

I have three under my broody. She has gotten up today..and one is pipped. I went ahead and listened. I hear chirping..in all of them. So the others are internally pipped.
Did yours get up while there were pips?

Has anyone else seen your broody get up while there were pips? If these hatch out fine, I will wonder once again what the big deal is about opening the incubator during lock down. ??
