    Pullet In Shock

A friend brought their new puppy over and let her loose in the yard before chickens were put away. The puppy chased and caught one of our 8 week old chicks. The chick was still alive, breathing hard but eyes were closed and neck seemed limp. Wrapped her in a towel and put her in a dark quiet...

    Sexing 16 wk Austeolorps

Hooray! We knew we were taking a risk getting them straight-run since these were the only two Aussies we got so I really hope they are both girls! The hatchery that sold them to us told me she found them one of the hardest breeds to sex since they mature more slowly than most other breeds. If...

    Sexing 16 wk Austeolorps

These Austrolorps were hatched the first week if Sept along with some Orphingtons. We sexed the orphs long ago but I'll be darned if I can tell if the Austrolorps are hens or Roos! Please help! The first two pics are bird #1 and the third pic is bird #2. Wasn't able to get the second one to...

    Rats running into coop!

We have a rat problem too and I'm wondering if it's too dangerous to the chickens to put out rat poison under the coop. Will the rats spread it to where the chickens might eat it?? Don't have much of a stomach for snap traps.

Black Copper Maran: hen or roo?

Just to clarify: the first 3 pics are bird #1 the last picture is bird #2 who we thought was a girl. All of you think it's a boy?? :(

Black Copper Maran: hen or roo?

Uh oh. I'll try to get another shot of that one later that shows the tail feathers more. That would be a bummer! We've had bad luck so far with our marans being male. Our beautiful female Maran was killed by a neighbors dog along with our white brahma; our two favorite chickens! :(

    A RED Brahma?

Yes. All of her other brahmas are white. Unfortunately she said she has decided to stop raising brahmas because they weren't good layers so this was the very last brahma chick shell have. We just thought our old brahma was the best pet chicken of our flock!

Black Copper Maran: hen or roo?

Here is our 12-week old bcm who we suspect is male. Below is a pic of our other Maran from the same hatch who we think is female. Would love some confirmation on this because I have someone who would like to take him if he's a rooster and we want to give him away ASAP since we are having a bit...

    A RED Brahma?

Out if the other breeds she raises I suppose the only kind that could hop the fence and produce that red color is an EE.

    A RED Brahma?

This is a 12 week old Brahma (?) that we got from a small Hatchery. Not really a Hatchery she's more of a hobby farmer who sells some of the chicks she hatches. She called this bird her "mystery Brahma" because it's red. She swore that she keeps all of her Brahmas in a separate enclosure from...

    Orphington: hen or roo?

If anyone is in the Salt Lake City area and would like either of these boys just let me know. We can't keep roosters in our neighborhood due to city ordinance.

    Orphington: hen or roo?

She has offered to replace any that are male. I care much more about the gender than the breed since we are just raising chickens for the eggs. I am curious to know what's going on with their strange appearances though. The buff colored girl we got from this hatchery is a regular orphington.

    Orphington: hen or roo?

I sent the hatchery lady these pics and she admitted that the blue one does look like an Ameraucana but said he can't be because she didn't hatch any Ameraucana eggs this season. She thought the pea comb might be a result of "fluting" of the blue and buff cross she's been breeding. She did say...

    Orphington: hen or roo?

They were hatched Sep. 9th. I'm sure of that because they were tiny fuzzies when we got them a few days later. As for the breed I'm still shocked that the woman who runs the hatchery would be so far off. She takes a lot of pride in her birds and seems very knowledgeable and professional.
