    eating issue advice please!

I have read several other posts about hens that wont eat and could not find the same scenario I am going through. I have a hen that has little interest in food. She seems to peck around at her food and consumes a little, but something has changed. About 2 weeks ago I noticed she seemed broody...

-35 below zero tomorrow night...Break down and put up heat lamp?

I am so glad you asked this. It is supposed to be -25 here in southeast Wisconsin tonight and I have not used a lamp yet and they have been OK... maybe a few little spots of frostbite on the combs. I can't do a ton at this point to make the coop warmer but the brick in the oven thing sounds...

    head shaking Milwaukee

She died on Christmas. No answers. I had been giving them vitamins I. their water about once a week and they had no exposure to wild birds. I lost mine to marked a few no the back. Probably was respitory as i cant see frost bite taking her like that.

    head shaking Milwaukee

Could the respitory illness be from ventilation? Wouldnt all the chickens be bothered? And if it is ears what are my options for issues I can look into? She seems better a little tonight. She is in my basement and u think she ate some oatmeal. I gave her water and a scrambled egg for dinner. She...

    head shaking Milwaukee

I have a 10 month old new Hampshire red that has started shaking her head back and forth. Not like a "no" shake but more like a ray Charles sway thing. It has been below zero at night and I was wondering if this can be from the cold? Her comb got a little dusky and tiped with black so I did the...

OK it has been 10 days. I gave big momma her second dose of safeguard. Over the last 10 days she has lost all her tail feathers and a bunch if other body feathers and I feel her body weight is even lower. BUT... this morning I noticed her red cheek hangy things were redder and she seemed way...

Just insulating the nesting box area?

So from what I'm reading, make it as draft free as possible, make sure they have a high calorie food, a wide enough perch, ventilation, non-frozen water, and don't worry about frozen eggs!? I'm in northern Wisconsin and its my first year too. My coop isn't amazing but i did protect it from the...

    wormguard plus

OK I finally got it in her. Just this morning. What should I expect now? Do I keep her in a pen by herself and check her poop? It recently went down into the 20's last night and I know cold isn't good for their digestion. I made her a breakfast of oatmeal, yougart, and some feed and she is in...

Yes I ordered it. It should be here by tomorrow. It was called safeguard and it said it was for horses. I found another safeguard that was a pill but the paste seemed easier. The pill one was for goats. It wasn't the Panacur stuff though. I hope it is OK. Her comb is getting more and more pale.

I see safeguard is for livestock. How do you know how much to use? How many days? Can you eat the eggs?

So those are roundworms. OK, at least I know that. I haven't tried anything yet except for acv, pumpkin seeds etc. I am in the info gathering stage. I'll look into safeguard. I already did the sevin stuff a few months ago. Probably part of the reason my birds are so terrified of me.

I rescued a few chickens in July and was suspicious that they were not laying. I took a fecal sample to the vet and found they did have just a small amount of eggs. I started the basics of acv and garlic, pumpkin seeds - threw a few drop of oxine in the water. Yesterday I went out to the coop...

    3 different roosting issues

I didn't know that! I didn't know I could trim feathers or that some birds don't roost. The one that does not roost anymore is a silver laced wyandotte. Her crop seems almost stretched out after the sour crop. Maybe she can't see to get down. Or can't balance anymore. Really interesting. My...

    3 different roosting issues

Lowest is about 1 foot and the other about 10 inches higher and staggered back so they don't poop on each other. The entire coop it about 3 feet off the ground. So the highest roost is about eye level with me and I'm 5'11". It really seemed to make a difference when I shortened the top roost...

Winter is Coming! Checklists, tips, advice for a newbie

I hung an few old blankets with a staple gun on the walls inside my coop last year. Also read about someone filling 5 gallon pails with hot water -covered!!!- to radiate heat. This year I found a plugin candle warmer at goodwill. Thought I'd put a few brick on that and then the waterer. See if...

    3 different roosting issues

Lifted "sweet but stupid" chicken up last night to the top roost where the others go, she couldn't get down. Looked terrified. Ill just forced the others down lower instead of lifting her up. The others were already in place so ill get them this week. 12 lost to the fox was during the middle of...

    3 different roosting issues

Thanks! My flock size right now is 7 girls. It has varied a lot in the last few months though. Just gave my 2 roosters away last week. Had two deaths in the few weeks before that. In may I lost 12 to a fox. One problem I have is that I didn't get chickens 2 and 3 until about 2 months ago...

    3 different roosting issues

:-) 3 different chickens, 3 different "issues" not all bad I think, just curious Chicken 1 Had sour crop quick is resolved-ish. After about a month if trying everything( acv, monistat, yougart, meds, diet) I came to the conclusion that this gal was either gonna make it or not, and she wanted to...
