Ugh - if she does have to go, I hope it's quick like your older one! The slow paralysis is terrible. I've gone through 6 chickens that I put down when they just couldn't walk anymore, and all were fairly healthy otherwise.
I did have one make a full recovery (though her symptoms were different...
I have a several-year history of problems with Marek's... I was down to two older hens that never had symptoms (but were vaccinated chicks) when I started over with 5 vaccinated chicks this past January. Two ended up to be roosters and went back to the breeder, and one developed paralysis at...
i'm leaning towards putting Zelda down, but it's such a hard decision. Yesterday I must have picked her up (after she tips over) at least 50 times - she has trouble just sitting, it seems . Now she's getting less interested in food, especially water or even the soaked oatmeal. She did eat some...
Thanks for the feedback and encouragement!
My girl Zelda I guess isn't as bad, because she is still eating. But now she can't seem to take a step without falling over, so the problem is getting to the food and water. Even when I set her right in front of it, it isn't long before she tries to get...
thanks - I've been using bottled water, which I'm hoping is the same as distilled? Also been trying the rooster booster, but I noticed she really seems to dislike the taste of that stuff.
By the way, I named one of mine Peaches as well, but it turned out to be a rooster! He's keeping the name...
I haven't read all 72 pages of this post, but hoping folks on here might have some advice...
I lost 5 chickens to Marek's over a year ago (put them all down after they couldn't walk). I also had one of my older hens that had been vaccinated get sick, and because she was special I kept her inside...
Anyone know if you can safely trim/cut the long end feathers of the wing? She worked off her vet tape wrap, and seems a little more mobile without it, except those long wing feathers keep tripping her.
I went out for a few hours and came back to find her on her side unable to get up, baking in...
I'm praying it isn't another case of Marek's. I hadn't noticed problems with the wings of the others that got it. I've read that a broken wing won't affect their balance, but it seems to me it would. In this case, the long wing feathers were poking between her legs, making it hard to walk. The...
I've posted already but didn't get any response, so trying again…. 3 month old pullet has been having trouble walking the past week, with one wing hanging down so low she trips on it. Today i found her twice on her side/back unable to get up. I bought some vet tape and tried taping the bad wing...
One of my 10 week old pullets has a wing hanging down, so much that she trips over it and has developed a sort of hopping method to get along quickly. I've tried looking at it, but don't see anything (but don't know what I'm looking for).
Any thoughts or tips?
Two of my 10 week old "hens" ended up being roosters, one of which had been held back inside while recovering from coccidiosis… when reintroducing them to the flock it didn't go well. I had the 2 sickly/smaller ones separated, and one is a rooster and was fighting through the cage bars, doing...
Very frustrating - I was going to just get some basic easter eggers, but he sold me on the more expensive "purebreds", and even picked this one out specially for me! Said it was going to have some interesting colors.
I'm back AGAIN hoping for some expert advice!
I concluded that a 9 week old from a batch of 5 is a rooster, and now I fear that another one in the group is also a rooster. I had one die from coccidiasis and have had 2 held back inside because they're half the size from being sick. I've been...
Thanks for any help! Here's another shot…. can't really see the feet though
It's about 9-10 weeks old now, and today I noticed one of my 3 year old hens is taking a special interest in him/her (if only to attack) and started squatting down when I pet her, which I haven't noticed in quite a while.
Anybody? Please? The comb and waddles keep growing fast (bigger and redder than a same-age barred rock, even though rock is twice the size), and it's a lot noisier than the rest.
Can you tell at 8 weeks? Or do I have to wait until he starts crowing?
