Great friends, leaves are good as agreed....will try to mow / shred them next time and store in dry place for the winter, why to waste them in trash bags when could be used for hens
Has anyone tried using dried leaves in the coop / nesting box instead of wood shavings, sawdust or straw / hay?
Pls let me know if it makes sense
Is it safe to assume that since some leaves are more acidic than others (e.g. oak) hence they prevent mite build up??
Thank you friends for the answers. She just started laying eggs a month ago and it was the first time I saw it. It did not happen today so I guess she was having trouble pushing the egg out. Hens must feel like giving birth, I guess, or may be not, cause egg laying happens almost every day
~~Hi Donrae Here are the pics.
Welsummer has yellow legs and single comb. Expected chocolate brown eggs, and got pink one today, her first egg
With crest and vaulted head, this polish mix has white feet and very small single comb, feathered legs (mix of brahma or marans) - expected white...
I BOUGHT 3 PULLETS AND SELLER CLAIMED THEM TO BE POLISH MIX, WELSUMMER AND BLACK TAILED BUFF MARANS....AND NOW THEY ARE LAYING EGGS AND GUESS WHAT, THEY ARE ALL LAYING PINKISH BROWN EGGS.....SO WHERE ARE MY WHITE OR CHOCOLATE BROWN EGGS?
Thanks Res. Actually that is plan B. I have covered the coop with tarps for the time being and it keeps the coop free of wind and rain. You are right that collecting eggs is kind of pain. There is not enough space for all of them to lay inside so they have found places outside. But egg hunting...
Donrae, that is great information to help know the diff between crest and tuft. One more question. There are hens, which do not have feathers on their head but still have the pointy bony head. What do we call that head bump?
Yes, they are in a coop right now but it is getting smaller as number and size of chicken grow. Most of them are on verge of becoming hens. So thought to have a bigger place for them
I thought those feathers are called tuft and crest is the hard bony and pointy top of head? Now I am confused. I checked ISBAR breeds on internet and found them to be very similar but little taller
