Fake Eggs in the Nest Box contribute to Broody Behavior? Is She Even Broody At All?

No one has been able to give me a clear answer about my EE who just started laying about three weeks ago. In the last week or so she started staying in the next box for about 4.5 hours, heat of the day. She eventually lays and then gets up for the rest of the afternoon til bedtime. No other...

New food, new treadle feeder, New headache. HELP!

They're still at the beginning since I just put the feeder out yesterday. I have some meal worms so I may try tempting them with that this afternoon after work. And I will put their favorite food, the H&H that I have in there as well. I'll just have to deal witht he fact that while training and...

New food, new treadle feeder, New headache. HELP!

Yes the feeder comes with instructions. Basically you leave it propped open to get them used to feeding out of it and stepping the the treadle. After a week you move the bolts so the lid moves a little when they step on the treadle, getting them used to it's movement. Then after another week you...

New food, new treadle feeder, New headache. HELP!

Okay so, I am new to chickens and if I am over thinking and over worrying, please tell me. I have four hens (BBS Orpingtons and an EE) all between 12 and 17 wks. I used a PVC feeder for them using H&H feed from the time I got them at 8wks and the PVC feeder wasted a ton and basically fed the...

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Thanks Bee! I may try that. I hear about all these people softening pellet feed and their girls go nutz over mash and fermented wet style feed but mine won't. And since they have a huge backyard to freerange in full of grass and bugs, I don't think they are hungry enough to HAVE to go for the...

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

So, about the heat, can you leave it outside and still get a good ferment and not ruin it? It's getting frakking HOT down here in SETX ( like upper 80's alreay and soon to be 90s all day) and I'd like to try to ferment some later in the summer when i have to switch to TX Natural layer crumbles...

    horizontal water nipples

I had trouble with those exact nipples. Not enough water coming out of them and the triggers seemed a bit "sticky" to me. Like it was hard to press them in. So I unscrewed them and put in vertical nipples for my 8 wk old orps. The vertical nipples can leak but I'm putting some plumbers tape on...

I think this coop will be really neat when finished. I don't have any chickens yet, I'm waiting until I get their house made and then I have to go on the hunt for Buff Orps.

Greetings chicken listers! long time no forum. Starting the New Year with prep for the coop to be built and adding decorative touches to the chicken supplies. This is our soon-to-be feed bucket and we added some hen stencils to dress it up a bit. The coop will be started soon, my...

Everything I'm seeing with the use of DE people are just using a sprinkle or handful in whatever you are using for your litter for smell, bugs, mites, ect. Not to use it as the MAIN bedding. It's too fine a particle. I'd like to talk the hubby into 3 birds cleanliness is key.

My coop will be a mobile coop with a little tray under the roosts only. So I was planning on using a little DE in the sand that I can sift with litter scoop.

That's interesting. I've been reading about DE here on BYC and a lot of people use it in their coops and mix it in with sand for dust baths. So, I dunno. I guess it depends on individual experience.

Hey guys, has anyone used diatomacious earth (food grade) in their brooders or coops? I had read on another chicken forum that is a good additive in with sand or sweet PDZ to dry out the poop and cut down on smell. But it is VERY powdery. Like, you pretty much have to mix it with something...

My friend here in Southeast TX has an open air coop. She said it's like a big bird cage - just open wire fencing and a roof and some nest boxes - and it works great during hurricane season and keeps the birds cooler in our fabulously hot and humid weather.

Hi there!! I know exactly where-abouts you are. Been swimming/fishing on Cow Bayou many a time. I don't see why one of those sheds/buildings you see pre-built on those places by the road (you know the ones I mean) wouldn't work as an excellent large coop. I wish we had one in out back yard, we...

Don't feel bad. I've never raised chickens. I've raised just about every other animal, except chickens so I've been reading extensively and talking to other chicken parents. Believe me, I have a persnickety husband who will not tolerate a smelly/messy backyard, a coop that isn't neat looking or...
