    Egg with strange content

My Leghorn hen always lays her egg in a nesting box but this one was found on the shed floor with a hole in it and the shell was not as strong as her normal. I cracked the egg in a small bowl with intentions to scramble and feed back. This "alien" looking object I thought was the strangest egg...

Can hens ever turn into roosters?

I don't mind if the 5 year old retires at all; I just don't want her to retire as part rooster :-) Today I'm borrowing a friend's rooster a couple weeks to see if what I've read will help.

Can hens ever turn into roosters?

Now this is absolutely an oddity! A second hen(3 year old EE just finished molt) in my flock of 13 crowed this morning! Should I get a rooster to stop this? This is year five I've had hens.

Can hens ever turn into roosters?

Yes, the hen was a good layer for her age; I'll be curious to see if she ever produces after this.

Can hens ever turn into roosters?

Someone told me to introduce a mature rooster to the flock and it will pull the hen out of it. Have you ever heard that? Only problem is there's a reason I don't have a rooster....they crow and chase tail all day. :-)

Can hens ever turn into roosters?

I have a 5 year old hen who recently went through molt and now acts like a rooster at times and crows when first let out of the coop in the mornings. She also "clucks" the other hens in when feeding. I haven't noticed any other physical change in her feather pattern or spurs on the legs. Will...

Has anyone started a Lavender Favaucana flock?

I see there is a new "designer breed" out there of Favaucana that started with a Blue Ameraucana rooster and Salmon Faverolle. Gorgeous birds! Has anyone used a Lavender Ameraucana roo? I'm just thinking about trying this mix. Any thoughts?

French Black Copper Maran pullet copper neck feathering

I purchased a FBCM pullet that was hatched 2-21-16 so she's 4-1/2 months old. I was just wondering if the copper feathering in the neck will still come in or in some cases, they don't ever get the copper color? She does have feathered toe on each leg. Does anyone raise this breed and have an...

Why would two of my young hens (7 & 8 months) start laying and quit after only two weeks?

This question is similar to one I posted a year ago but with a little twist. My first time molt for 6 of my hens came earlier than expected, which was great. They began to lay eggs in January consistantly and now it's February; three of them have now stopped laying. Is this normal? This is going...

Lame RIR pullet with video (probably malnutrition)

I have read through your entire journey and am in a very similar situation with my Blue Lace Red Wyandotte pullet. Same deal with bully hens and I didn't notice the hens change in gait till night before last. Was so hoping your experience ended on a positive note and very sad that it didn't...

    Vomiting chicken?? please help!

I'm in a very similar situation with a 5 month old Blue Lace Red Wyandotte. For the past week, she frequently drool/vomits when she lowers her head. I've noticed her bobbing her head either up and down or from side to side. She's also become less active than normal, not lethargic but just not...

    Food Scraps?

I feed left over treats all the time. Plus, the hens bond with you when they know you're the hand that feeds them. Makes them also easier to round up if needed.

Hen tossing staw over back while walking?

Today, my Light Brahma was watching my Leghorn in her nest. After the hen got off the nest and left the egg, the Brahma walked around the nest area tossing hay stems and dried leaves over her back. The Brahma had already laid her egg in a different nest earlier in the morning. It was pretty...

Why would two of my young hens (7 & 8 months) start laying and quit after only two weeks?

One hen is an Orpington, the other is a Dominque. This is the first time this has happened. Any suggestions? All 12 hens are happy, healthy, and hardy.

My EE is the biggest camera hog!

My darling little EE laid her first egg last Sunday! So far this week she's given me 4 absolutely gorgeous mint green eggs, but to top it off, her third egg weighted 2.96 ounces!!! This is her laying her first egg. And yes, that's a kitty carrier she decided to nest in the first couple days...

My EE is the biggest camera hog!

When I went outside to begin my chores, I noticed my four girls comfortably perching on the fence. They seemed so peaceful so I ran into the house and got the camera, hoping to get off some decent shots of these lovely ladies. My EE still looks a little prehistoric or maybe like a hawk or eagle...
