After heat, how long for eggs?

We've had record setting heat this June/July (many days in the mid 90's) and my hens haven't slowed down any. It might not be the heat.

    Chicks in the cold

It would help to know how old they are. But, based on their behavior they sound fine. Are they protected from the wind and the rain?

how to keep my dog from eating my chickens

There was an episode of the Dog Whisperer that covered this topic. Perhaps you can do a search for it. Basically - if you dog views you as the true leader - then you can "claim" your chickens as your property and let your dog know not to touch them. It's hard to explain - but, it works for...

Why have a rooster, except for hatching out eggs?

My kids are 7, 9 and 11. They are NOT allowed to chase the chickens. My one rooster has never been a problem with any of them.

Stopped Laying Eggs - Will she re-start

I have a Black Australorp that had starting laying eggs when she was old enough. She was a great producer for a few months - then my dog (or a neighbors dog) terrorized her and she ended up with a bunch of feathers missing, a big bare spot, and a wound. It all healed just fine - several months...

Moving their roost from outside to inside

I thought I'd give an update. We picked them up and moved them into the coop and locked them in there all night. They sat on the floor right by the pop door where we put them. The next night, this is where they went on their own and continued sitting on the floor for several nights. Tonight...

Coop and run SQ Feet Per chicken

You could hand a bug zapper over the run area to create a source of toasted protein.

New winter coop finished!! Upgrades on my BYC page.

O.K. - I must be blind. But, how do the chickens get in?

Moving their roost from outside to inside

I think I'm going to have to do that. It's been dark for a couple hours and they are all huddled on the ramp to the pop door. There's barely enough room for them there. I haven't handled them in a long time (since they were chicks about 6 months ago) - I hope I don't freak them out by picking...

Moving their roost from outside to inside

Well, I took down their other outdoor option - the sun is going down and they are just standing around outside (locked in the run area - after free-ranging all day). Hopefully, they'll go inside the coop and take advantage of the roosts.

Metal roosting poles and cool weather

I would switch it for wood. Just go find a tree branch - or a 2 x 4 from a construction site, then you'll never have to worry about it.

Moving their roost from outside to inside

This is the first winter for my four chickens (Golden Wyandotte (2), Aracauna, and a Black Australorp). They had a roosting area in the outdoor (completely protected) run. They've been using this - but, as it is getting colder I'd like them to move to the roost in their new chicken house I...

Bug zapper = tasty chicken treats?

I bought two bug zappers in the last few weeks. The first one got clogged up with bugs in ONE night and had to be blown out with an air compressor in order to work again. It was a Stinger. Don't buy a Stinger! Then, a few days ago I replaced it with a Flowtron. This one zaps tons of bugs...

I have done similar and put Neosporin on it. My vet told me that was the right thing to do.

I think you are fine. You would probably be fine at 2 feet or more - just a guess however.

How to encourage them to venture out farther

Thanks. I have a tractor - so maybe I'll move it around a bit even with the door open to give them the idea. The tractor is the white PVC portion below.

How to encourage them to venture out farther

I have six, 8 week old hens that I just started giving some freedom to. I was worried they would venture too far and possibly get into trouble. We have 3.5 acres and have a neighbor within sight on only one side. After letting them free on two afternoons the farthest they have been from...

    Keeping the grass

I've already accepted it won't be perfect. Maybe if I give them a dust bath area that will help a bit also. Today I had them in a new part of the lawn in the chicken tractor I built. It worked well, except they spilled the water ... hopefully, it wasn't too early in the day when they did...
