    Problem with bobwhite hatching

I have one of them open, but still partially covered. It seems when I open them the heat just goes out the top and the eggs get to cold.

    Problem with bobwhite hatching

This is my first attempt at hatching bobwhite quail. They have begun to hatch but I am having almost 100% mortality rate. The chicks are coming out of the eggs just fine. They are not deformed. They are a bit late ( 1 day ). They live for a few hours after they hatch and then die. I have...

    Sick keets?

It has been 36 hours with no change in the babies. Does anyone know a humane way of disposing of them?

    Sick keets?

This morning I had my 6 guinea eggs hatch. They are all still in the incubator. 4 of them are doing great. They are drying and starting to get up on their legs and move around the incubator. The other 2 do not look well at all. They do not seem to have any control of their muscles. They...

    Sick keets

They all hatched around 8 - 10 AM today. Like I said the 4 are acting how I would expect. They are wobbly but now they are starting to run around the incubator. The other 2 are quite alive but look like bloated bodies washed up on the beach. They can not even hold their heads up. I will...

    Hermaphroditic Chicken?

Is there such a thing? The reason I ask is I have a bird who is now 5 1/2 months old. During the whole time it was growing up I swore it was a hen, and not just because when I bought this batch of birds I bought nothing but females. This week, the bird has begun to look much more like a roo...

First time hatching chicken eggs and I have a couple questions

Today at 5:00 PM is day 21. When I got home from work I was pleased to see 2 chicks had already come out. There are still 8 eggs unhatched in the incubator. Question 1: How long should I leave the hatched chicks in there? Question 2: Will having them move the unhatched eggs cause any...

    Suprise in the nest box.

Thanks for all the info. The mystery has been solved. It is in fact a duck egg. I saw her sitting in a pet carrier I set up with some wood shavings this morning. When she left the box sure enough one of those eggs was in there! Thanks again!

    Suprise in the nest box.

That is always a possibility, but there was not a 22 hr. period between the two eggs. She would have done it quick. And there was a noticeable difference in the egg color. I guess I will see if I have 2 brown again this afternoon I am going to go with the light color are the ducks.

    Suprise in the nest box.

Well I ate a lot of these eggs and I can not say I really noticed any difference in the "texture" or flavor. And I can not say I really noticed any sort of difference in the feel either. Now I am a total newbie when it comes to raising poultry so maybe I just not seeing the difference. But...

Anyone have pictures of a 4 by 8 coop?

Here is my chicken tank. It is 4'x8' on the inside (the run bellow is larger).

    Suprise in the nest box.

I got home from work last night and I went to the coop to collect the eggs. I was hoping to have 3 nice eggs. 1 green from the Americana, one brown from the RIR and one cream colored from my mutt RIR. They are all about 5 months old now and they started laying this week. Well in the nest box...

    Am i the only one?

The only thing that keeps me from doing the same is I am sitting in a cube working 9 hrs. a day and it is a 20 min. drive home!

My very young hen stopped laying

Finally she laid another egg this morning. Appears that she laid it from her roost. This one too had an extremely thin shell and was broken when I found it. I went yesterday and bought the oyster shell and I put a bowl of it out for them this morning. I hope she is ok. My other 2 hens are...

My very young hen stopped laying

They free-range and have access to layer feed. My other RIR (well not a purebred I found out) and Americana are laying just fine. I have been taking the shells from the eggs we eat and drying them out really well (usually after I bake something in the oven I just throw them in there while the...

My very young hen stopped laying

I have a RIR who just started to lay eggs. She is 5 months old right now. Sunday morning I found her first eggs in the coop. One was small but nicely formed. The other did not have a complete shell and the shell was very very thin and flexible. I did not think anything of it at the time...

    Bobcat Showdown

YIKES! No I won't be shooting at a bobcat. I share his habitat. I will just take extra precautions with my birds. The bobcat is just doing what bobcats do. Stray dogs, on the other hand, are the results of a careless humans, those need to be shot.

    Bobcat Showdown

I live out in rural Florida. I have several chichens, a few ducks and some guinea fowl. Had a bobcat visit the other week. He got a hold of one of my ducks. My partner heard the commotion and ran outside but it was to late. He did manage to chase off the bobcat but this beast was not...
