I love the really old cookbooks. I have a few from the 30's and 40's but even by then they were doing food coloring.
Butter does taste amazing in baked good. Also buttermilk! I love that stuff for my cakes lol.

It sounds like mulberry heart. Their hearts don't grow large enough so when they get too big for the small heart they get raspy and then die suddenly. I have not found literature on this, but I was told about this by a 30 year chicken farmer.
I read that originally (before 1930) Red velvet cake (devils food cake) got it's red color from the chemical reaction of non-alkalized cocoa and buttermilk reacting together. I really really want to try it but I can't find a recipe anywhere!!

It sounds like sour crop but if it is flat now then she should be able to eat.
You need to cover the wound. If you can separate her also that it is better. None sticky bandages are the best (after the antibiotics) and I have found pine tar soap to be a great bandage. They won't peck it and after the wound is healed just wash it off.
