I'm glad I read this thread. We are newbies on our new farm and are learning as we go. I hand raised all of ours from chicks and they all follow me around and do this as well, but only for me.
Yet another newbie question from me! I recently discovered a nest of duck eggs my one female has been staying on. Possibly up to 5 days old as I try to check for eggs. They are free range in the yard and this is the first time she has stayed hidden in one spot. There are at least half a dozen in...
@Amiga I did what you suggested earlier today and afternoon. GOOD NEWS! He is walking! Though he seems to still be weak, he is managing to the other side of the yard which is quite a walk. I'm feeling super hopeful now that he will make a full recovery of whatever was ailing him. I'll continue...
@Amiga Could you tell me how to do an Epsom salt compress? What do you apply it with, do you hold it on or attach it short term with something? And where would be the likely spot of a pulled muscle/sprain? I will try whatever to help him out.
He also walked like 3 feet tonight when I went to...
@Amiga So, they have free range of the yard. It is primarily grass; we have some aspen and oak trees, then a portion of it is just leveled top soil/dirt. The yard is currently being landscaped through the summer - a big work in progress - so the dirt portions are where we have some other things...
Would you happen to know what they might do to check that? I have been checking around and the nearest vet that has bird experience in over an hour away; and the initial visit is pretty pricey. I love my duck, but I can't justify a bunch of tests and stuff you know?
I really appreciate the...
So as an update and hopefully more advice? I did that flush. I also bought a supplement with regular scratch feed (he likes that best) and have been giving him a steady supply of it. It seems like he has gained at least a couple pounds back and continues to eat and drink eagerly. However, he has...
Thank you so much for the reply. They have free range of the yard, so it's possible he ate something... but I can't guess what. There hasn't been anything out of the ordinary out there and like you said, the other two are fine. I will look up about that flush. I was going to go to the store...
I have a 2 year old pekin male. Sunday I found him just laying on the ground, not wanting to get up. This is not normal for him at all. I read online to give him bananas so I did after goingto the store. He was up again when I fed him. This morning I went to check on them and he was again barely...
She's healing, thanks. Her head is still really scabbed though. I don't know when to let her back out? The other male just goes for her head when they mate... then she just runs and hides all day/night in a bush. I don't feel like that's normal, but I'm new at this. Didn't think 4 ducks would be...
So I feel terrible. One of the males was terrorizing a female, but they are in an open yard and I'm pregnant, so catching her was impossible. I got rid of the male, he was just too aggressive to the other ducks and dogs. I finally caught the female today and her head is all messed up. Feathers...
@HollyDuckFarmer oh what a fantastic idea!! I really would have not thought of that! I think that could work prefect for our set up. I don't know how common this is, but my ducks go crazy with any water. I mean, they get in it and splash around until it's empty. Lol. So this is why the dog bowls...
Problem I am finding is the male duck is significantly smaller than the female. He can't reach into anything over maybe 1.5ft tall, especially if it gets low. Is it alright to half bury those heated 2 or 3 gallon buckets in the ground? W ill they still heat and be alright in rain/snow? Sorry im...
I've read a bunch of threads here, but maybe I am not understanding. I would like to simply get a heated water bowl f or my ducks so their water doesn't freeze, this seems a popular option. However the only ones I can find are 1.Shallow dog dishes which the ducks well just splash the water out...
