Well thanks! Good info. The 21% stuff is nutrena later feed and the 16% is just feed store stuff.

Egg production and feed protein content

Has anyone looked at the relationship between feed protein and egg count? I have always used 16% protein feed and just after molt this year I switched to 21% protein and it seems like egg count is up. It’s more money but wanted to know if anyone else sees this and if it’s worth it.

    The big laying slowdown

Thanks! Good to know I’m not alone. I saw a big slowdown with my first flock back east but it was in year 2 after molt.

    The big laying slowdown

hi all, wondering why my chickens have slowed down laying suddenly. I have 20 hens, common breeds and I went from about a dozen a day to about a half a dozen a day. They are one year old. Same layer feed as my last flock, 15 hours of light a day thru timed lights. Maybe they’re coming into molt...

    ADOR1 Chicken coop door?

I had the Ador1 and was very happy with it. I used a cheap battery charger to keep the rechargeable battery I bought up to snuff and it worked well. The only thing to watch for is the groove at the bottom of the door catches chips and stuff and that will make the door re-open. If you clean it...

    Tiny chicks not growing

I can only tell you I had the same experience this year! Bought some chicks from a local breeder, they never grew, and I lost some. In my case I gave them save a chick and the save a chick pro biotic which I think was the issue. Messed with their digestion. Won’t ever do that again. I put a...

    Flocking chickens again!

Last time it was barred rocks, buff Orpingtons, eggers and a couple reds. This time I needs to get breeds that do well in high heat, so some eggers for sure, but I’m going to let the breeder guide me here. Any suggestions??

    Flocking chickens again!

Well this will be flock number two. Moved 2500 miles from CT to AZ and can’t shake the chicken bug. Getting the chicks Monday and must say I am more excited than the first time. Lots of predators here but always up for a challenge.

    Premier Electric PoultryNet

Tractor supply has plastic posts with eight hooks on them that work well for sagging. As for in the barn use, the fence can touch dry wood which is an insulator. Also, you can put plastic bird netting over the top. That's what I do with my electro net and I have not lost a chicken from above or...

ok so i have started to build the COOP

It all comes down to how many chickens you are willing to loose to the predators in your area. I have the exact same coop as you are building but mine is 7X7X7 with 11 hens in it and they get along fine because they can get out in the run all day. The only thing different is I lined the whole...

Wanting to hear people's experience with coop size

I have 11 medium sized hens in a 7X7X7h foot hen house. They have 2 roost bars over a poop pit. During the day the electric door opens to a 4X12X3h Run. In summer I add an electro net for another 4X20X4h run, but not in winter. All the girls seem to get along.

    Opinions on Chicken Tractors

One thing to be sure of with tractors like that is to be sure the ground is level enough. You don't want any gaps for critters to get in. Agree on hardware cloth. Capacity looks good. No question you should get chickens. They are wonderful. Good Luck.

    Premier Electric PoultryNet

I put up mine in the spring and take it down in the late fall. This way it does not get "grown" into the ground. You can move it around which is great. I get bird netting and stretch it over some metal fence posts to make a sort of tent thing so the hawks stay out. Couple of things: Make sure...

Florida winter vs Florida summer ventilation

Nope. Unless you are keeping tropical breeds, 35 is nothing for our feathered friends.

    Finally finished!! (:

As I understand it, they can have light at night as long as it is dim. In fact they prefer it from what I read since they can see predators and react instead of total darkness. Mine have a dim LED light on at night and they sleep right through it.

    How Much Head room

Yep. Chickens live in those mini coops and in chicken tractors closer to the ground than that all the time. The head room is for the adults, it sux to keep banging your head on the ceiling when working the coop.

So many chickens, so little space - Insight?

Here is what I did. I have 11 hens in a 7x7 hen house with an attached 4X12 chain link run. In addition to that, I have an electric (165 foot) net that I set up in any shape I want. During the day, the chickens leave the house go out through the run and forage in the electric net. At night they...

    Coop floor suggestions?

Blackjack is the right stuff. Its rubberized roofing tar. Goes down easy, I even put it up the walls a bit, it gets covered with the chips. Had it for years and I have very happy and productive hens. Once cured it does not smell even on hot days. Wood needs to be dry when applying and reasonably...
