    Greetings, better late than never

It's been two weeks since I joined BYC, and I'd like to wish everyone and their birds a merry Christmas. Caroline loved this holiday, and so did Josephine and the others. I miss them all but I also keep good memories of the holidays I shared with them.

    Greetings, better late than never

Thanks for your condoleances, Cabinchicky. I wrote a brief post-mortem report at https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/842434/sick-hen-that-suffers-seizures-and-refuses-to-eat#post_12470064 in the hope that future users of BackYardChickens.com will be able to detect and diagnose accidents and...

Sick hen that suffers seizures and refuses to eat

In the hope that current readers will deduce explanations for Caroline's sad fate and future readers will find them useful, I'm going to share my observations on the late Caroline's body. The immediate cause of death was that she choked and drowned on her own vomit: her bill and the blanket...

    Greetings, better late than never

Kelsie2290, thanks for your welcome and your best wishes. Unfortunately it's too late now: Caroline passed away. She was our last hen, the most charming, docile and intelligent of them all. She's survived by our 12-year-old budgerigar, a wood dove whom she was friends with, two young...

Sick hen that suffers seizures and refuses to eat

BravewingTheHen, Wry Neck was indeed one of the possible diseases of Caroline, and while her behaviour didn't look exactly like your video, (from the list of related videos) matched her early state of confusion quite well. At the same time, however, her crop was impacted; the treatment...

Sick hen that suffers seizures and refuses to eat

Thanks for replying, BravewingTheHen, and for asking new questions. She was twisting her neck in the afternoon, before the current string of seizures kicked in. She didn't back into things (though she collides into whatever is close to her during her seizures). She was able to walk normally...

    Greetings, better late than never

Thanks for your nice words, TwoCrows. Right now Caroline has suffered another seizure; I had to hold her, hug her, talk to her until she calmed down and I could return her to her cradle. Now... now I'm down to praying and hoping for improvements.

Sick hen that suffers seizures and refuses to eat

She just had a new seizure, this time she whimpered while she left her cradle and crawled on the ground; I had to hold her, hug her and talk to her until she calmed down and allowed me to return her to the cradle.

Lost a Bird to Illness this Morning

That being said, somewhat similar symptoms appeared today in my last living hen, Caroline, so perhaps any replies to https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/842434/sick-hen-that-suffers-seizures-and-refuses-to-eat will shed light on your own chicken's death as well.

Lost a Bird to Illness this Morning

I'm no expert but the description of the poop makes me think of liver and intestine failure. Disease? Parasites? Poisoning, maybe?

    Greetings, better late than never

Cluckcluckgirl, Roostersandhens, thank you very much for your warm welcome. I already created the thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/842434/sick-hen-seizures in the hopes that I'll be able to save Caroline's life. Now I'll knock on wood. As long as she's stable, resting in her cradle...

Sick hen that suffers seizures and refuses to eat

This is my first post in BackYardChickens.com, and it's an emergency. 1) What type of bird, age and weight? RIR, 4 years old, normal weight, no major recent weight loss or gain. 2) What is exactly the behavior? Several months ago she got very short-sighted but we assumed it was just old...

    Greetings, better late than never

Hello everyone. I discovered Backyardchickens.com two or three years ago and it proved an extremely valuable source of documentation and advice that helped me in some very difficult moments with my birds. I wish I could give good news together with my greeting, but unfortunately right now I'm...
