I made a quail cage with a ramp so they can go from one level to the other..
They don't really seem to be getting the hang of it yet..
Is there some specific angle and spacing of the rungs there should be?
I'm not sure if I'll get a response in time...
I'm hatching some coturnix quail right now and they started pipping around midnight last night. It's 9am now. The first one I noticed had pipped is still not out. It's just that same little pip it had last night.
I'll give it some more time...
I had to go out for the day so left the sick one in the brooder situation under the heat lamp.
I went asking around at the feed stores and nobody has Corid. Hadn't even heard of it.
They know of the disease but they don't sell a treatment for it.
They could order the sulpha stuff. It...
I also introduced to the coop 4 or 5 days ago.
(The other newer chickens are mostly brahma mixes. This is the only suspected easter egger mix.)
I noticed that none of the new ones have been taking to the roosts to sleep.. They prefer to go in the nesting boxes to sleep.
I wanted to...
One of the 2 month old chickens I put down in the main coop with the others is not looking so great today.
I believe she's an Easter Egger? or maybe a mix with one... she has greenish legs.
She doesn't seem to have suffered any injury but she's all puffed up and just wants to close her...
unfortunately i can't stand the sight or smell of cooking eggs.
kind of funny i know being very into raising chickens.
i would have little problem eating one of the birds.
I sell my eggs to friends.
i think i'd prefer to give them meal worms unless i could get someone else to do the egg...
seriously though.. how do you provide extra protein? i feel kind of strange feeding eggs to chickens. were you serious?
would it help to try to pluck the broken tips of feathers out to make way for new ones?
i wouldn't look forward to that job but i think it would be a good idea to do...
I have a few hens which had all their back feathers ripped out by an extra ornery rooster.
I got rid of the rooster in the spring but it's been months now and the feathers don't seems to be growing back yet.
Is there some way to speed things along?
Will they have new growth before the winter?
Here is that chick today.
I still kinda suspect he's got some issues.
Also he's the only one with that colour of beak which is interesting. (at least i think it's a he)
but the leg thing seems to be mostly better now.
My one 5 week old chick who survived the crow attack sadly did not escape unscathed.
It has a pretty nasty looking pecking wound. It probably needs stitches but of course it's Saturday so the earliest we could go to the vet is monday. Coincidentally I already have an appointment for my dog...
It turns out one of the chicks survived! It was hiding under the nesting boxes.. So I only lost 4 and not 5. Still very sad. There was a really interesting looking green legged chick with loads of personality in the losses. :( These aren't bantams though. They were hybrids of a big...
I put my favorite of my incubator hatch a month ago down in the coop last night feeling like they were about ready to join the other 4 year old hens in my flock.
They were 5 weeks old.
I left them down there this morning for only 2 hours and when I came back crows were just leaving the scene...
