i have 2 sussex roos that were hatched in mar. and have become a super problem in my flock. 1 was the more dominate roo until the other started to crow and now they fight, and beat up on my girls to the point where the hens have to be in pairs and all together to be out in the run so they can...
2 free speckled sussex roos must go soon, we are in lebanon,ct. i am a my wits end w/ them. they fight, and beat up the girls and this morning they had 1 of my delewares cornered and she was stuck in the fence as they continued to beat her up and breed her. seperatly they would be ok i think...

Is that where the Mitlitskis have their farm? DS went to school with their daughter. Small world!
yes mitlitsky eggs are in lebanon, on card st. near the windham line. although i don' think they have any birds there anymore. most of the store eggs are from new england eggs and koffkoff...
they were supposed to be pullets but 2 ended up being roos they came from welp hatchery. i'm about 1 hr from providence but if you want them i would be willing to meet you near danielson or putnam,ct which is about the 1/2 way mark.
i have 2 speckled sussex cockrels that are about 4 months old they have some really nice colors but my older hens keep picking on them, so i have had to keep them seperate from the flock. i would like to see them go to a good home, they were raised as chicks together so they get along fine.
i have had some good luck w/ cover crops and i also grow some sunflowers on the sides of my run fences for some shade and cover and then pick the flowers in fall and feed the seeds. i have tried rape, buckwheat, winter rye, clover, mixed pasture grasses. what i find works the best is the winter...
i'm almost sure they're roos now as yesterday they went from the house brooder to the 4x6 tractor brooder coop and they immediatly tried to fight/mate w/ my 2 older delaware pullets. which is too bad but atleast i still have 1 ss pullet but the roos will have to go as i alradey have 1 frizzle...
hawks are birds of prey and they are federally protected so if you were to "harass" it that would be illegal. you could try crow decoys or hang some cds on string i believe that hawks don't like the flashing of the shiny cds. i did that because i had a hawk that would roost on the coop roof he...
i have speckled sussex that are just over 1 month old and 2 of them have a bit bigger combs and a bit pinkish w/ out any wattles yet . as for feathering they seem to be lacking hackles and sickles. they have the same shaped feathers at the base of the tail as the other sussex, which are sort of...
looking for some welsummers preferrably pullets, i got some chicks that weren't marked and they ended up being sussex. so i'm looking for the welsummers. thanks jim
based on your local north ny, moira is in the potsdam area correct?, for your window placement i would get 4 if possible and maybe place 2 on the south side 1 on either side of the door and 1 east and 1 west that way the sun would heat the coop as it rose from east and you would get the daylight...
electric fence will help out. i would probably run 1 strand at about 4in from ground level and then a couple more above that. and def build an enclosed run esp w/ the hawks and bobcats.
made some homemade traps and poison ,pb and quikrete balls in a 5gal pail w/ only a 1.5 in hole cut in it and also filled a couple of 5 gal pails w/ water almost all the way up used a 2in hole saw and cut a hole in the lid then smeared some pb around the bucket at just about water level once mr...
