Connecticut!

Has anyone in Connecticut had any luck with growing a cover crop in their run? The purpose of this crop would be to help keep the mud/scratched up dirt to a minimum. I'm considering clover or alfalfa but would like to hear any success stories of plants that do well in our climate. BTW, I'm in Shelton.

i have had some good luck w/ cover crops and i also grow some sunflowers on the sides of my run fences for some shade and cover and then pick the flowers in fall and feed the seeds. i have tried rape, buckwheat, winter rye, clover, mixed pasture grasses. what i find works the best is the winter rye, rape and buckwheat, this summer i'm going to try some field peas, they will grow fast if you have decent soil, i would do a soil test just so you know what you're working with. i have 2 different runs connected and i rotate the chicken through each run throught the summer and plant cover crops depending on the seed a couple of times. i really like the winter rye as its fast growing esp in the summer, i usually let it get to about waist high and then let the chickens have at it once they get it down to about ankle height i then rotate them to the other pen then after they get the next pen down to the same height they go back to the 1st pen i rotate until they are down to the dirt again then rototill and replant. the rye will also grow in thick if you let it grow all summer then turn brown in the fall, i have also done that and let them have at it all winter, then replant in the spring. good luck.

Hi,
If anyone would like a free easter egger rooster I've got one to offer. 3 roosters is one too many for my flock. Let me know if you're interested and we can arrange a pick up or drop off point. I'm in Oxford and can meet you partway. Thanks.

We dont have a cover crop but I use sand mixed with gravel in my run. I also feed and water in the run along with feeding them greens out there. I cant see how one could grow a cover crop with out a double run to grow out 1 side while they trash the other.

Is anyone going to the connecticut poultry breeder society show in Chester? I am, does anyone know when coop in time is?????

I'm thinking about moving to Connecticut; somewhere near the Darien area. It is a beautiful state! No garbage on the sides of the street, like here in New York.

Just be careful if you own chickens, that area doesn't like chicken folk! Why don't you check out Easton, Weston or the backwoods of New Cannan? They are nice small clean towns and nice and private to raise poultry/maybe less strict.
